Chapter 292 Catching the Traitor
Nick adjusted his glasses with a practiced flick. As the head of tech and co-founder of the company, he always had that air of authority about him.
The idea of Nick being dirty made Landon's stomach twist.
Nick called out, "Just grabbing something I forgot!"
Landon didn't say a word, just watched as Nick made a beeline for his computer. Nick glanced at the screen, then pulled a notebook from the drawer and slipped it into his briefcase, ready to head out.
But something on the computer caught his eye, and his face changed. He looked up and locked eyes with Landon.
Landon walked over and threw an arm around Nick's shoulders. "Mr. Fields is here today and insisted I have a drink with him. Come on, you should join us. It's after hours anyway!"
Nick, clearly flustered, shook his head. "No, I can't. My stomach's not good, can't handle alcohol. You guys go ahead."
Landon wasn't letting him off that easy. He steered Nick into Kelvin's office. Sabrina, sitting cross-legged on the couch munching on cookies, looked up, startled.
Landon said, "Sabrina, go wait in my office. Ryan's there."
Sabrina nodded, slipped on her bunny slippers, and dashed off with her cookies.
Now, it was just the three of them. Nick, slowly regaining his composure, spoke up. "Sabrina really is sharp, to have caught on."
Landon couldn't hold back. He punched Nick. "Nick, you're a cop. You've been a cop for over a decade. Why betray the force?"
"Control yourself, Landon," Kelvin said.
Landon snorted, blocking the door. Nick, realizing this, took off his police jacket. "I know I'm a cop. I've been diligent for over ten years, but what good has it done? I'm in my thirties, unmarried, can't take care of my family. My parents died, and I couldn't even afford their funeral. What's the point of being a cop?"
Kelvin stared coldly at Nick. "You knew being a cop meant sacrifices-family, wealth, emotions, even your life. If you understood that, what right do you have to complain? If you felt wronged, you could have resigned. Why betray us?"
Nick gave a bitter smile, lighting a cigarette. "Because I didn't want to lose the prestige of being a cop while still enjoying a wealthy lifestyle. I know I'm a bad person, but what can I do? People live for themselves. Mr. Fields, I don't think I did anything wrong."
Landon said, "Leaking police secrets, and you think you did nothing wrong? Nick, was trading your future and freedom for money worth it?"
"No, but I don't regret it. At least the money gave me some dignity. Call it vanity or shamelessness, but I enjoyed it. It was worth it," Nick said.
Kelvin sighed. "Landon, take him to the interrogation room. You know what to do." Landon nodded and pulled Nick up, but Nick gave a sinister smile.
"You all love your high-minded principles, don't you? What if I told you Bill was in on it too? Mr. Fields, how would you handle your nephew? He was the one contacting the outside. If anyone deserves a harsher sentence, it's him."
Landon, enraged, started hitting Nick. Kelvin, snapping out of his shock, pulled Landon away. "Don't hit him. It's not worth it."
Kelvin then handcuffed Nick himself. "If Bill is involved, I'll treat him the same. We're all adults; everyone must face the consequences of their choices. Nick, you'll see everything you want to see."
Landon took Nick away. Kelvin sat at his desk, hands shaking as he took some medication, finally calming down.
He stared at his phone for a long moment before dialing. "Arrest Bill. Search his city apartment for evidence."
Following orders, Landon informed Sabrina before heading out on the mission.
Meanwhile, Sabrina took Ryan to the police housing complex, the night air thick with an eerie silence.
Sabrina said, "Ryan, Landon set this place up for me. It's just me here!"
Ryan raised an eyebrow. Landon had clearly put effort into the place, decorating it to Sabrina's tastes, showing his feelings for her.
Ryan said, "There are two bedrooms. I'll stay with you tonight."
Sabrina was momentarily stunned but then beamed. "Great, Ryan, you're the best."
Ryan shook his head, unable to refuse her.
Seeing Sabrina munching on cookies, Ryan went to the kitchen. Finding the fridge stocked, he made her some pasta. She devoured it happily.
Once Sabrina was asleep, Ryan called his team. "I'm staying here tonight. You can all go home. Pick me up in the morning."
Landon, unaware that Ryan was staying at the housing complex, spent the night interrogating suspects. He didn't emerge from the interrogation room until noon the next day.noveldrama
Landon received a call from Alexander. "Alexander, what's up?"
"Allison needs you," Alexander said, handing the phone to her. "Mr. Wells, I need you to report to the government. I want to conduct a study on Patricia and need approval."
Landon frowned. "Ms. Bennett, have you found something unusual?"
Allison confirmed. "I suspect she's not entirely human. There are non-human elements in her. This must be kept confidential. I need official authorization and a research team."
Landon was stunned. He glanced at his phone, making sure he wasn't hearing things. This felt surreal. "Ms. Bennett, can you give me more details?"
Allison explained briefly. "I've reviewed Patricia's reports. Her bones are abnormal, and her weight doesn't match her frame. I suspect her bones have been infused with synthetic alloys, enhancing her combat abilities. Also, there's something off with her brain."
What do you think?
