Rush the Edge: Chapter 42
Malaki skates behind me and hums under his breath. “Someone is awfully chipper this evening.”
I don’t even bother looking over my shoulder.
I know he’s sporting a shit-eating grin.
“Must’ve been those delicious smoothies left on our counter for us.”
I turn to glare at him but fail. Turns out, I am chipper. “You’re not getting one next time.”
He snorts. “Are you seriously that possessive over Daisy that you don’t even want me to have the smoothie she made?”
Maybe.noveldrama
Another pair of skates comes into my peripheral. “You know it’s okay to share, Kane. Sharing is caring.”
I bare my teeth at Lars, my grip on my stick tightening with force. From the tone of his voice, I know what he’s implying, and he should know that I am not against knocking the teeth out of one of my own teammates’ mouth.
Emory skates in between us. “Will you fucking relax, animal?”
“Relax?” I growl under my breath. “Do you know what he’s referring to?”
Emory chuckles, and I want to tear his goalie’s mask off. “Of course I do. But you deserve it. How many times have you messed with me about fucking my fake wife? Or Rhodes and his nanny?”
A few of the other guys chirp while skating their rounds, pleading their cases that I deserve every joke coming my way. Most of them don’t even know about Daisy and me, but they’re still coming together to poke fun.
I do my best to ignore their jabs, focusing more on the opening in the rink rather than my rising temper.
Malaki skates over again, tossing the puck back and forth. “Seriously, though, that smoothie has given me some serious energy.” I watch as he rushes down the ice and back. “See.”
“You’re like a child.”
“Malaki! Save your energy for the fucking game!”
Malaki salutes the coach.
He replies with a curse under his breath.
“He’s right,” I say. “We win tonight, and we will secure our spot in the playoffs. Get your shit straight.”
Malaki laughs. “You get your shit straight.”
I steal the puck and send it flying down the rink into the goal. “Looks like I’m just fine.”
“There she is. Our favorite mascot.”
I spin so quickly I almost slip.
Malaki bursts out laughing while Rhodes, who rarely smiles, chuckles.
“Yeah, you’re fine, alright,” he jokes.
“Fuck off,” I snarl.
Daisy is paying me no mind, which completely messes with my head. We didn’t say much after the dressing room incident because Reese and Malaki were both standing outside the door, waiting for us with amused looks, like they heard every last moan fall from her mouth.
He and I stayed back for some last-minute drills before the game while Reese took Daisy home, which means we haven’t seen each other since I was dick deep inside of her, coaxing her to show me what her pussy could do.
Just the mere thought sends my dick erect.
I squeeze my jaw and adjust my cup before making my way over to her.
After she throws some merch over the glass to a few fans, I skate behind her.
“Was that a thank-you-for-the-orgasm smoothie waiting for me before the game?” I ask in a low tone.
I catch her sweet grin in the reflection of the glass. She skates off without answering me, as if I won’t actually follow her on the ice.
“Quit following me, and go warm up,” she chides.
“I warmed up earlier”—I lower my voice—“with you.”
I zero in on her white teeth sinking into her plump bottom lip.
“Careful,” I warn.
Where can we go so no one will see us?
“Careful?” She peeks at me out of the corner of her eye.
“If you keep biting that lip, I’m going to have to remind you who it belongs to.”
A thrill shoots down my thighs as a blush spreads over her cheeks.
“You’re crazy.” She tries to hide her smile.
“Crazy enough to fuck my best friend’s sister and not feel even a sliver of guilt afterward.”
Daisy’s skates come to a halt, almost sending her flying onto the ice.
My gloved hand wraps around the front of her waist, and I haul her back up. She presses her back against my front, and I hum.
“Kane!” her voice wavers with worry. “River is here.”
Is that supposed to keep me from touching her?
“And?”
She huffs, putting space between us. “He’s going to know.”
I tilt my head. “Be honest. Do you really think he’ll disapprove?”
I ask the question with full curiosity. It’s not really something I’ve considered until recently. The more we cross the line, the more the unease slips from my mind. Back when we were teens, River would have been repelled by the idea. If any guy showed interest in Daisy, he shooed them away or made up some excuse as to why they couldn’t hang out with us. But now we’re adults, and if anyone is protective over her, it’s me.
“I…” Daisy’s gaze darts around. “I think he’ll be concerned.”
My shoulders tense. What she means is that he wouldn’t approve of a guy like me with a girl like her. My reputation precedes me, and I have to admit, it isn’t a good look, especially since he thinks I can’t handle my own finances as a grown man.
“I see the look on your face, and that’s not what I mean…” Daisy slowly skates away from me.
I ignore the fact that she just read my mind. “Then what do you mean?”
A flash of panic crosses her features, and she skates away. I want to follow her across the ice, snatch her around the waist, go back to our little hiding spot, and work whatever it is she’s thinking out of her mouth, but the buzzer goes off, and the lights turn down.
I catch up to her, and we both climb off the ice.
“Not going to tell me?” I whisper in her ear from behind.
She pauses but remains quiet.
Knowing I have to take the ice in a moment for the national anthem, I desperately attempt to make a deal with her. “If we win, you have to tell me…”—I pause—“while naked.”
I mean, let’s get real. I’ll work it out of her one way or another, but at least this way, I have more than just the playoffs to fight for.
Daisy turns, and my heart stalls from the flirty smile on her face. “Too easy. You have to get a goal too.”
I smile like a maniac with the challenge. “Done.”
She rolls her eyes, and I hear my name being called.
I quickly poke her side, causing her body to jerk to the side. I take advantage of the move and let my lips graze her ear.
“Thanks for the smoothie.” My chest grows tight from the thoughtfulness of her action. “Yours was better than my mom’s.”
I skate onto the ice with my usual, straight-laced face, but on the inside, I’m buzzing.
A goal, a win, and then Daisy underneath me?
I’ve never been more ready for a game.
What do you think?
