Rush the Edge: A Brother’s Best Friend Hockey Romance (Blue Devils Hockey Book 3)

Rush the Edge: Chapter 41

“How long has he been gambling?” I ask quietly.

I glance at the door behind Kane nervously, like we’re back in time, tucked away in my childhood bedroom, afraid my parents or River will know he snuck inside.

Kane eventually drops his arms and pulls away from me. I release the grip I had around his waist, but I keep my feet planted in front of him. Adding distance between us feels wrong, especially now.

The last time he trusted me with the truth, I pushed him away, for good reasons. But this time, I’m staying put.

Kane’s intense gaze never wavers. “It never stopped.”

My thoughts freeze. “Never?”

His hard jaw tightens, the faint light enhancing the sharp edges of his face. “He didn’t reach out to me for about a year after I left for the juniors…”

I glance away briefly, knowing the reason why. It isn’t guilt that I feel for doing what I did, but I recognize the brief doses of fear, as if Kane will feel betrayed if he finds out that I meddled with a truth I never should’ve been privy to.

“But since then, it’s been near constant.” Kane runs a hand through his hair, messing up the perfect style leftover from the media shoot. “He bled me dry one time. That’s why Malaki moved in with me. He covered the rent.”

My mouth parts slightly. Just how much money is Miles losing these days?

“Who else knows?”

He glances away. “Just Malaki. Your brother still believes what everyone else does—that I’m the one with the gambling problem.”

I stare at my devil horn headband on the ground—the same one that I threw at him moments ago.

“And now you.”

My heart skips a beat when our eyes catch. He looks so vulnerable with his closed-lip frown but so resilient too. Broad shoulders, tense with frustration, but a heart that bleeds on the inside.

“I thought you said you’d never trust me again.”

Kane takes a step toward me, and for the first time, I remain still. Surprise flickers against his features, only to smooth when he’s less than a breath away. I’m lost in the quiet moment, my heart thudding.

I look at his mouth, tracing the perfect curve of his lips with my eyes.

I’m desperate for the feeling his kiss leaves behind.

My breathing slows when Kane buries his fingers into my hair. He cups the side of my face, and I grab onto his wrist. “I don’t want to trust anyone,” he admits. “Especially you…”

His words cut me, and I look away.

He quickly pulls me back to him by gripping my chin and tilting my face. “That’s only because being close to you leads to all the wrong things.”

I watch as Kane’s Adam’s apple bobs slowly with a swallow.

“I wasn’t man enough to ask you back then…” His words linger.

A noise leaves me when Kane’s hand lands on the small of my back, pushing me flush against him. Our pounding heartbeats blend, and the room grows hot.

“Ask me what?”

“If you still feel the same undeniable pull between us. The unbreakable connection. The desperation to touch…”

Our warm breath mingles, my body craving him in the worst way. Tiny sparks of desire tingle against my skin as a flush creeps its way up my neck.

“Answer me,” Kane says.

The room spins, and he brings my face closer to his, our lips nearly touching.

“Why does it matter what I feel?” I whisper. It’s not like this can really go anywhere. Right?

“It matters because if you say yes, it gives me a reason to be good again. To be the guy I used to be before everything got fucked. You’d be my reason, Daisy.”

He is good. He tries to hide it, but he is. The fact that he thinks he’s not hurts me.

“Daisy.” He is pleading with me, and I can’t deny him, not when he’s like this.

A second passes.

Then another.

My mouth opens. “Yes. But—”

“No buts.”noveldrama

My body ignites when his mouth seals against mine. The way his tongue slips inside to explore should be a crime. His kiss is possessive and untamed, bringing out a side of me that I didn’t know existed.

I make a noise when he tugs on my hair, kissing me so hard that our teeth clank against one another. We break apart, and his eyes flip back and forth between mine, like he can’t believe that we’re doing this again.

“Shit,” he mutters.

He picks me up in one fluid movement and wraps my legs around his waist.

I grab onto his face, his scruff scratching my palms. I kiss him again and again, my hair falling around us like a shield of protection.

“I want to kiss every part of your body,” he murmurs.

The stuffy air of the dressing room blankets my sweaty skin as Kane pulls my costume down and over my shoulders. He peppers my neck with soft kisses before moving down to my collarbone.

Chills rush to the surface, and my head falls back with pleasure.

“Take me,” I whisper.

Kane stills, his mouth hovering over my flushed skin. Before I know it, he’s spinning us around and flicking the lock on the door. My back presses to the floor, and I’m stripped bare. The trailing of his sultry gaze over my curves has my stomach flipping. It’s a thrill I never knew I’d like.

Kane’s shirt flies over my head, and he quickly pulls his pants down. He’s at my center before I have a chance to think and pushes into me slowly.

“Oh my god,” I sigh.

Kane’s mouth moves to my breast. The warm flick of his tongue against my nipple sends my legs open farther. “So perfect,” he whispers, taking turns between each breast. “Do you know how perfect you are?”

My soft laugh is full of sarcasm. Perfect? I have an autoimmune disease.

“My body literally attacks itself,” I remind him. “I’m far from perfect.”

Kane freezes above me, hauling himself to his forearms. I furrow my forehead and move against him, wanting more, but his hand falls to my hip to stop me.

My bottom lip pops out.

“Take it back,” he demands.

I inhale, searching for air. “Take what back?”

“You said you were far from perfect.” He narrows his gaze. “Take it back, Daisy.”

Kane starts to pull out of me, and I panic. “Fine!” I quickly say. “I take it back.”

His face smooths, and a cocky grin replaces his grimace. “Good girl. Now take that perfect pussy of yours and show me how much it wants me.”

Heat strokes my insides, and my eyelashes flutter with pleasure. Kane quickly flips us over, and suddenly, I’m on top of him. He hits a new angle, and it steals the breath from my lungs. His knuckle presses against my clit, and pleasure flows to my toes. I moan. My hips grind against him on their own as an orgasm rips through me suddenly.

“Fuck, Daisy.” Kane’s voice is strained, though I can barely hear it.

“It’s…so…” I move again, and suddenly, another orgasm surprises me. My legs quiver around Kane, refusing to let him up.

“Don’t hold back, baby.” His husky voice and wandering hands send me over the edge. “I’ve got you.”

I do as I’m told. I throw my head back, and Kane’s fingers dig into my thighs. Suddenly, I’m lifted up and hovering over him as he comes. My lips part as I watch his hand glide back and forth over his hard length. The veins in his hand strain with the movement, and a groan tears from his mouth.

Jesus Christ. My lips part from the sight.

As soon as he’s done, our eyes catch.

The dark-blue color lights up, and I’m back to staring at the boy who stole my heart years ago.
