Chapter 259
After being driven out, Simon went to look for Helena.
They were still living in a rental house. Most of the money from the shares Janice had given him had already been invested in his new company.
Seeing him return, Helena started grumbling non-stop, "Simon, didn't Janice give you money before? Why don't you buy a house for us to live in? We can't stay in a rental forever. The high-rise buildings outside block out all the sunlight. It's so uncomfortable."
Sarah chimed in as well, "That's right, Simon. Even if you don't buy a villa, a spacious apartment would do. Or maybe we can book a hotel suite. It wouldn't cost much for a whole year, and there would be staff to clean up every day. Wouldn't that be much better?"
Simon sat down, his gaze dark as he scanned the dining table. It was covered with takeout bags from high-end restaurants. Instantly, he felt annoyed.
"You never cook at home anymore?"
He suddenly grabbed a paper bag. "This restaurant charges at least two to three hundred for a single dish. You ordered four dishes in one go? That's almost a thousand dollars for one meal!"
Hearing that, Helena and Sarah looked confused.
"Simon, we're not bankrupt. We can still afford this. I know your business hasn't been going well lately, but you can't expect me and your sister to suffer because of it. It's just food," Helena muttered, her voice growing smaller toward the end.
The anger in Simon's chest was about to choke him. "Suffer? Do you realize the situation we're in? You're still living like royalty while I'm one step away from begging on the streets."
In the past, he had never considered Helena and Sarah a burden. His focus had always been on running the company while everything else was handled by Janice.
At that moment, a realization struck him. He had never paid attention to how his mother and sister lived when he was with Janice.
Thinking back, it had always been her who took care of everything. Whether it was buying groceries and cooking meals or ordering food from restaurants, she had covered all the expenses. That was why he had thought life was so easy.
In just one year, his entire world had turned upside down.
Simon sat back on the couch without saying a word. Looking around the messy house, he felt a headache creeping in.
Involuntarily, his mind drifted to the past. Back when Janice was still around, everything at home was well taken care of. She handled household matters effortlessly.
Just as he was about to lose himself in those memories, a sudden knock at the door snapped him back to reality.
Ever since being threatened by Louis, Simon had developed a lingering fear. His heart clenched as he stared anxiously at the door.noveldrama
Sarah was the one who answered it. Standing outside was Elsie, dressed as impeccably as always. She took one look at the chaotic state of the house before
stepping inside, barely concealing her disgust.
"Why aren't you going to the
company? Have you followed up on the orders? The recruitment of seamstresses has not been going well either. Do you have a plan for that? She had no choice but to come and discuss these matters with Simon.
The company still needed to be taken care of. She had invested money in it, after
all.
Hearing her tone, Helena was
immediately displeased. "Who do
you think you are to question him
like this? Why are you not handling things yourself? You dress so
lavishly but never think about taking care of us. You're so unfilial."
What?
Elsie let out a snort and leaned on the dining table. "Excuse me, ma'am. What exactly is my relationship with you? We're not related. I never married your son, so why should I be responsible for taking care of you? Also, I spend my own money on my clothes. Even if I want to dress up like a peacock, what does that have to do with you?"
Helena could not accept that her son's girlfriend did not respect her. "You heartless and selfish woman! Simon, break up with her."
Elsie crossed her arms. "Go ahead. But if we break up, I don't see your son moving up in the world. On the contrary, I'll withdraw my investment, and that so- called new company will be nothing more than an empty shell."
"My son invested money into that company too."
Helena glared at her fiercely before lowering her voice. "Simon hurry up and buy a house. This woman is no good. If she takes the money and leaves, we'll be the ones suffering."
In her eyes, not gaining an advantage was the same as losing out.
Simon listened to their conversation while looking around at the mess surrounding him. His mind kept flashing back to how things had been when Janice was around.
Back then, the house was always clean and orderly, and every meal was beautifully prepared. The household was well managed too. He never had to worry about anything.
Compared to the chaos and petty bickering surrounding him, his past life felt like a completely different world.
What do you think?
