Chapter 104
Celie went directly to her lab and we stayed back.
"Don't you think it's a little weird?" Sara asked as she looked upon Celie's retreating figure.
I nodded, "She looks..."I trailed off.
"Irritating, annoying." Sara completed.
But I shook my head. "No, I don't mean it like that. I mean she looks different. Like she isn't the same Celie that we met before, it's like she is way too excited for the project and it feels like more than the job."noveldrama
Sara looked at me, “Listen, I think we are being a little too vigilant. Maybe she is doing her dream project. You know how scientists could be. I don't want to accuse an innocent person. I have done that before and I don't like the feeling. I don't want to be that person again."
She looked at me and gave me a wry smile.
I knew what she was intending, but I couldn't help but think about Celie's weird behavior.
Something was very off here and I needed to find that.
As we entered the lab, Celie's face lit up in a way that instantly made me uncomfortable. Her energy was as intense as before, but now it was directed squarely at me.
"Ella! Sara!" she greeted us with that same unnervingly bright smile. "You've both arrived just in time. Ella, your insight and foresight... truly, it's been invaluable. None of this would've been possible without you."
I forced a smile. "I'm just doing my part."
"More than that," she insisted, her voice almost too sweet. "Your understanding of the pack dynamics, the integration of the vaccine-it's genius."
I felt Sara shift beside me, clearly as uncomfortable as I was with Celie's praise. “Uh, thanks,” I said, keeping my tone neutral.
Before I could say more, the door behind us swung open, and Adonis strode in. His presence filled the room in an instant, his broad shoulders and stern expression exuding authority. The previous Alpha of our pack, and my father, was never one to be subtle.
"Sir," Celie greeted him with a respectful nod, her over-the-top enthusiasm slightly tempered in his presence. "It's an honor to have you here."
"Celie," Adonis acknowledged her with a brief nod before turning his attention to me. "Ella, I heard you've made progress."
"We have," I replied, my tone more serious now. "The vaccine is in circulation. Over 30% of the pack has already received it, and the results are promising. But there's something else you need to know." I glanced at Sara, who gave me a slight nod of encouragement. "The witch-she's been more active. There's something about this situation that doesn't sit right with me. We need to be cautious."
Adonis listened carefully, his expression darkening as I spoke. "You think the witch is connected to this?"
"It's possible,” I said, my voice firm. "Her influence has been spreading, and I don't trust the timing. We need to be on guard."
He frowned, nodding thoughtfully. "We'll deal with it. But first, there are other matters."
His gaze shifted to Sara, and I immediately felt the tension rise between them. Adonis' jaw tightened as he took a step closer to her. "Sara, we need to talk."
Sara, leaning casually against the wall, folded her arms and raised an eyebrow. "Oh? About what?"
"About us," he said, his voice controlled but heavy with emotion. "We've been distant, and I want to make things right. We're still family."
Sara's eyes hardened, her usual smirk gone. "Family?" she scoffed. "Is that what this is? Because it sure didn't feel like family when you have to act partially to one daughter."
Adonis' face tightened. "I did what I had to, Sara. To protect the pack."
"To protect the pack," she echoed, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Right. And where did that leave me? Alone."
I shifted uncomfortably, glancing at Celie, who seemed keenly aware of the rising tension but remained silent.
"I'm trying to fix this, Sara," Adonis continued, his voice softening. "We can't change the past, but we can move forward. Together."
Sara's eyes flashed with anger. "You can't fix something that's already broken, Adonis."
His expression shifted as if she had struck him, and then, something in his gaze hardened. "Is this because you've bonded with someone? Your mate-what's his name?"
I shouldn't be surprised that he knew about Sara's mate, it was obvious he would know that. He always knew things. Sara's expression darkened as she listened to this.
Sara tensed, her arms dropping to her sides. "Don't go there."
Adonis' temper flared. "So, it is. You think just because you've bonded, you don't need me anymore? That's it, isn't it? You've replaced me."
Sara stepped forward, her eyes blazing. "This isn't about him! This is about you! You were never there, Adonis. You don't get to come back and pretend like everything's fine just because you want to now."
"I'm still your father, and I reject your mate bond. He is not allowed here and not in your life. He is the son of the traitor." he growled, his voice trembling with anger.
"It doesn't matter to me. I believe
every Alpha in one way or the other is always a traitor. First you left Ella and her mother and when she came back, you left me. We all are replaceable people in your life.
Svef
Always a visitor, never a family." She yelled in anger.
Adonis' eyes glowed in anger, he was furious, this argument was going nowhere except making me more uncomfortable.
"I am your fucking father, and you better stay within your limits," He growled.
"Then act like it!" Sara shouted, her fists clenched. "You don't get to control me anymore."
The silence that followed was suffocating and I could feel the weight of all the unresolved tension between them pressing down on the room Adonis looked as though he wanted to say something more, but he held back, his expression a mixture of fury and hurt.
Without another word, Sara turned on her heel and stormed toward the door.
"Come on, Ella. I need a drink."
I hesitated for only a second before
following her out. As the door
slammed behind us, I could hear
Adonis exhale heavily from the other side, the sound of a man trying to hold himself together. But the damage was done.
What do you think?
