Chapter 574 Enlightenment
Chapter 574 Enlightenment
The police were not here for Grayson because they did not say anything to him and instead showed their identification to Ann. "Police. We suspect you're involved in an intentional harm case. Please come with us to assist in the investigation."
"No…" She rushed to Grayson's side and hugged him. "Grayson, can you testify for me? I didn't do it on purpose. It was just an accident!"
He remained silent. His mind was in a daze, and he still could not believe what had happened until now. Ann Evans... How could she do such a thing? This is a hospital! Moreover, I've already made it clear to her that we have a familial relationship, not a romantic one. Why did she...
"Grayson, say something, Grayson!" She held onto him as if her life depended on it. "Grayson, help me, Grayson…"
He shoved her away and stayed quiet.
"Grayson, what's wrong with you? Why aren't you speaking?" Ann looked terrified. "Grayson, I only have you. You can't ignore me. Help me!"
"Give me a good reason." He was mentally and physically exhausted. "You pushed Caitlin off the sidewalk and had her run over by a car! The surveillance footage captured it. How can I help you?"
"Plead with Madeline. Ask her to let this go!" Ann grabbed his arm. "Grayson, I'm already yours. We are husband and wife from now on. Madeline and I are sisters-in-law. How can she send her sister-in- law to prison? I didn't do it on purpose! It was an accident. Please, just beg and ask them to let me go!"
She knew very well that whether or not she would go to jail depended on whether the victim would press charges against her. As long as the victim recalled their charges, Caitlin's tragedy would be classified as a simple traffic accident, and Ann would only need to pay some money.
In contrast, if the other party accused her, thus classified as intentional harm, she would be sentenced to prison.
She did not want to go to jail. Just the thought of it made her shudder.
The place was horrifying since there was a loss of freedom, no pretty clothes to wear, no delicious food, being crowded with many people in a small cell, constantly being controlled by others, and possibly even being bullied.
She would rather die than go to jail!
"Sister-in-law?" Grayson looked at her incredulously.
"Yes!" Ann nodded vigorously. "Once I marry you, Madeline and I will be family. How can she sue her sister-in-law?"
"Marry me?" He gazed at her like she was a lunatic. "Are you saying that I'd marry you? When did I say that? Why would I marry you?"
"I am yours now, Grayson!" She grabbed his arm forcefully. "Grayson, I know you like me. We have mutual feelings for each other. Now, we're husband and wife. You must take responsibility for me, don't you?" She looked at him with hopeful eyes.
Briefly, he stared at her and coldly brushed off her hand. "No, I won't."
"What did you say?" She stared at him in shock, trembling all over. "Grayson, what did you say?"
"I said I won't marry you." He repeated. "I made it clear to you long ago that my feelings for you are familial, not romantic. And now, I realize I don't even have familial feelings for you anymore. I won't marry you."
Only then did he realize that he was truly blind. Sebastian and Lucas both disliked Ann and treated her with extreme indifference. He felt uncomfortable deep down, thinking that his brothers were too heartless.
How could siblings who grew up together turn against each other without any regard for their past relationship? Lucas was always warning him that Ann had ulterior motives, but he thought Lucas was simply biased against her.
He always believed she was the weaker party between Sebastian and her. His indifference was appalling, but only then did Grayson realize that it was not simply his brother's coldness but his own foolishness.
They were right; Ann indeed had ulterior motives. He had always been considerate of her, but she had schemed against him. She even deluded herself into thinking that he would marry her.
Back then, Sebastian made it clear in front of Ann that if Grayson dated her, he would be expelled from the Harts. He needed to understand the seriousness of the issue and separate from her before he could return to the family.
If she truly cared about him, she would consider his well-being and not put him in a difficult position. However, Ann did not care about him but herself.
He knew very well why she did what she did today, and because of that, he felt utterly disgusted. Scheming with such lowly tricks? How manipulative!
Would he marry her, though?
No, he would not.
He would rather be single for the rest of his life than have a calculated marriage like this.
He looked at Ann firmly and said, "I won't marry you, and in the future, I won't care about you anymore. Whether you live or die, free or imprisoned, it has nothing to do with me…" He stepped back and looked at the police. "Officer, do as you please."
"Grayson, what are you talking about?" she screamed. "Don't you love me? How can you treat me like this? I gave you my virginity! You have to take responsibility for me!"
"You schemed against me. None of this is under my will." Grayson glanced at her coldly and added, "No law states that I have to marry you just because we had sex, so get that gutter of an idea out of your mind because I will not marry you!"
"No… No…" Ann retreated in fear.
Things shouldn't be like this. Grayson loves me! He has for a long time! Even though Sebastian treated
me badly and strongly opposed him dating me, he still wholeheartedly helped me and took care of me in every way. What else could it be if not love?
She firmly believed that Grayson loved her deeply, which was why she bravely schemed against him. Grayson loves me! I gave myself to him, so he must resist Sebastian, be responsible for me, and marry me! Content bel0ngs to Nôvel(D)r/a/ma.Org.
However, she never expected to hear such heartless words.
Not only did he refuse to take responsibility for her, but he also declared that he would sever ties with her and cease to care about her life. How could this be?
"Grayson, you cannot treat me like this." She sobbed and threw herself into his embrace, regaining composure from the shock. "Grayson, I love you. I'm already committed to you, so you cannot abandon me! You must marry and treat me with love and kindness, and I will reciprocate! I promise, once we're married, I will obey your every command. I will be a devoted wife and mother and provide you with a loving and joyful family!"
