Mateo's gaze grew colder and more sinister, and he glared fiercely at Liam. "Fine. There's nothing to talk about between us."

The Hunt family was the head of The Great Eight of Beach City. Also, the power of Hunt Enterprise couldn't be underestimated. Even Benjamin had to show Stefan some respect. Mateo knew he couldn't afford to offend Stefan, especially given that he still lacked power.

If the Hunts wanted to protect Renee and the issue got bigger, Mateo wouldn't gain anything.
