Chapter 21
Chapter 21
Chapter 21 She Gets So Little Allowance
In a daze, Reyna led Valerie to her new room.
Only then did she realize that Valerie had fallen and got hurt.
“Does it hurt, Valerie? I’ll apply some ointment for you later.”
“It’s fine. The wounds will mostly recover tomorrow.”
Valerie wasn’t intending to give Reyna a chance.
Watching Reyna lead her to a guest room, Valerie got a rough idea of what to expect.
“See, Valerie? This is the room your dad and I prepared for you! Do you like it?”
The room was smaller than her previous one but larger than the storage room.
It was in a log style, a simple collection of solid colors that Valerie dug.
“Well? Do you like it?”
Reyna asked cautiously and tentatively, observing Valerie’s expression as she asked.
There was still no change. Valerie still looked calm, and no one could tell her–emotions.
Reyna stared at Valerie’s face without blinking.
She wanted to hear what Valerie would say.
Valerie looked over her shoulder at Reyna, who looked nervous. Valerie sighed helplessly.
“It’s great. I love it.”
She sounded happy. Reyna was relieved at once.
“I’m glad that you like it. Be good from now on, OK?”
Valerie sneered silently.
She thought, “Be good?
You took my room, and I was put in the storage room. I was there for two years before you found out, and now you change my room.
You call it a surprise.
Since when has it been so difficult to have a room of my own in my own home?
How can a room be a gift?
It is normal for parents to provide their kids with a comfortable room. Ccontent © exclusive by Nô/vel(D)ra/ma.Org.
I tried to talk to you many times in my last life before I was kicked out.
Yet I never got to.”
Valerie suppressed her unhappiness and slowly breathed in and out through her nostrils.
If she hadn’t gone out with Zoe to get the exercise book, they wouldn’t have found out at all.
She looked at the clean new room in front of her.
Yet she wasn’t happy at all.
She pretended so that Reyna wouldn’t feel awkward.
Everything in the room was new
There were some new clothes in the wardrobe.
All the old clothes were stored in the storage room.
Valerie’s eyes were gloomy and cold.
“Is the stuff in the storage room still there. Jayvion?”
“Yes. Ms. Valerie. Do you need anything? I’ll go fetch it for you.”
Valerie shook her head.
“Jayvion. I want a key to the storage room.”
Jayvion immediately knew what she wanted.
He figured that Valerie didn’t like the room.
He worked so hard today, for he wanted her to be happy, yet things went backway.
Jayvion was a little upset, but he still bent over to get closer to her.
“Sure thing. Ms. Valerie. But I’m afraid that you have to wait till tomorrow: I’ll go and make a new key”
Valerie stared at him without blinking. Just as he was a bit uneasy under her gaze, she smiled.
“Hove the color and the decoration of the room. Jayvion, thank you!”
She was being straightforward enough. Jayvion, of course, knew the reason why she didn’t like the room.
He wanted to come forward and hold Valerie tightly.
He thought. “If she were my granddaughter, I would dote on her so much!
I would spoil her!
Who else can be as clever and sensible as her?”
Yet he soon felt so sorry for her.
He sniffed and secretly raised his hand to wipe the tears from his eyes.
“You may go ahead and do your homework then, Ms. Valerie. I’ll get you dinner.”
He smiled as he left the room and hurried to the kitchen to get her dinner.
He didn’t want her to be hungry.
As soon as Jayvion left, Valerie threw her schoolbag on the bed and looked around the room.
There was a knock on the door.
“Jayvion? Didn’t you say that you…”
Valerie was confused and came forward to open the door, thinking that it was Jayvion.
Yet she saw Kieran’s serious face.
She froze, and her warmth when facing Jayvion was all gone.
Kieran was the silent type. They faced each other awkwardly, and neither of them said anything.
“You… I heard that you got hurt.”
In the end, it was Kieran who broke the silence.
“Yes. It’s fine. I fell. That’s it.”
Valerie understated.
Yet Kieran didn’t look happy.
He suddenly got down on one knee, gently reached out, and grabbed Valerie’s arm, checking carefully.
The more he looked at it, the gloomier he became.
“Go disinfect…”
“Alright…”
Her wounds were about to heal. There was no need for disinfection at all.
Kieran’s fingers were cold, in stark contrast with Valerie’s burning skin.
The two utterly different temperatures make her heart tremble slightly.
She tried to pull her arm out of his hand subtly.
And of course, he could tell. He grasped the hand she was trying to pull away.
He rubbed her wounds gently with his finger, and he was pissed off inexplicably.
And some other complicated feelings overwhelmed him.
He recalled the scene in the car that day when she seemed to disappear, and he subconsciously exerted more force on his hand.
“Kieran!”
Painful, Valerie shouted.
He came back to his senses, quickly let go, and looked at her already red arm.
“I … I didn’t mean to.”
“Kieran, the next time, if you’ve got something to say, just say it.”
Valerie took the opportunity to widen the distance between herself and Kieran.
Kieran’s fingers trembled slightly and uncontrollably.
He took a deep breath and stood up.
“Be careful.”
He said coldly, and then they were in an awkward situation again.
“Ms. Valerie, your dinner…”
Jayvion stood aside with Valerie’s dinner and whispered.
He freed them from the embarrassed scene.
Kieran looked at Jayvion and saw the bills next to the plate.
“What’s this?”
“Mr. Kieran, it’s Ms. Valerie’s allowance this month.”
Kieran’s eyes turned gloomy.
“Allowance? If I remember correctly, the allowance is transferred directly to each person’s account. How come she gets the cash? And why does she get so little allowance? Are we broke or what?”
He didn’t sound nice.
The daughter of the Horton family got 1,600 dollars per month as her allowance.
If words got out, the family would become a laughingstock.
Those servants of the Horton family who had worked here for a long time received 1,300 dollars a month.
Jayyion may even get paid 30 thousand dollars a month.
Zoe’s allowance per month was at least 160 thousand dollars.
And Valerie had only 1,600 dollars?
What could she do with 1,600 dollars?
Jayvion wasn’t terrified by Kieran’s tone.
Instead, Jayvion raised his voice.
He said, neither humbly nor pushily, “You’re right, Mr. Kieran. I don’t think it’s right, either. Yet when Mr. Reese opened an account for Ms. Zoe, he didn’t bring Ms. Valerie together with him, and he wasn’t specific about how much allowance Ms. Valerie could get, so we didn’t dare to be bold. That’s why we give 1,600 dollars to Ms. Valerie each month.”
Jayvion’s rising tone and tactful words made Kieran stare at him without blinking.
Yet Kieran couldn’t utter a word.
