Chapter 540 Making Arrangements Before Death
Marcus held Natalie tightly, and both of them remained outside for a long time. When Marcus finally composed himself, returning to his usual indifferent expression, they finally entered the villa.
At that time, William and Charlotte had already arrived and were summoned into Charles' study.
The three sat opposite one another as Charles ordered Sheldon to bring out stacks of documents. Then, he placed a key in front of Charlotte.
"Charlotte, this is the key to my safe. It's a gift from me to Nat. These are the wedding gifts from the Holdens to the Walkers, and these are for Nat."
Charles placed the documents neatly before Charlotte and William.
"I never knew, nor did I imagine that someone from the Jenkins family was still alive. Not only that, she even orchestrated such an elaborate scheme, dragging so many innocent people into it. It's my fault. Because of me, Nat was taken away from you at birth."
Charles had no intention of hiding the truth from William and Charlotte, but he spared them certain details of the situation.
All he wanted was to help Marcus with arranging the wedding before he passed.
After all, Wesley and Laura had never truly raised Marcus. Furthermore, they even got divorced after he had grown up.
As Marcus' grandfather, Charles felt like it was his responsibility to handle this matter for Marcus while he was still alive.
"William, Charlotte, I have one more request." Charles' eyes reddened as he looked at them. "If I'm no longer around, if Marcus and Natalie ever get into a disagreement, please don't scold or punish Marcus.
"You both know that even though Marcus has parents, I was the one who raised him. I don't know how much longer I have left. Once I'm gone, he'll be all by himself."
"Mr. Holden Senior, don't say that." Charlotte couldn't bear to hear such words. "You'll live a long life. You'll be around to see Marcus and Natalie's child be born."
Charles shook his head bitterly. Feeling his strength fading, he knew he wouldn't last that long.
"Marcus has always been sensible. If he does something wrong, just talk to him nicely, he'll listen. I'll remind him myself to never hurt Natalie or betray her in any way.
"I have also prepared a will. This inheritance is meant for Marcus and Natalie. If Marcus ever cheats on her or wrongs her, everything will go to Natalie. And if Natalie is the one who wrongs Marcus, she can take half of it as compensation."
"Mr. Holden Senior, please don't say such things," William spoke up. "If Marcus hears this, he'll be heartbroken."
"Wesley and Laura haven't returned yet," Charlotte added. "Marcus has always trusted and respected you the most. If you're no longer around, none of us can predict what will happen to him."
"That's right!" Sheldon choked up, standing behind them. "Please don't say such things, sir. It's too painful to hear."
"I asked all of you here to discuss Marcus and Natalie's future, not to be sad and sorrowful." Charles shot a glance at Sheldon.noveldrama
Sheldon's tears fell freely. He couldn't hold back his emotions, so he turned around and wept openly.
Charles ignored him and turned back to William and Charlotte. "These here are
for Natatlie's brothers. Call it a bribe if you want to. I hope they can treat Marcus well and not bully him."
"Grandpa!"
"Grandpa Charles!"
Marcus and Natalie knocked on the door before stepping inside.
"What are you all talking about?" Marcus asked, suppressing his emotions. He and Natalie had been eavesdropping outside for a while, but Charles and Natalie's parents hadn't noticed.
"What are these?" Marcus asked.
"Since you're here, take a seat!" Charles pulled Marcus to sit next to him and then gestured for Natalie to sit next to Charlotte.
Charles looked at Marcus from head to toe. He had poured his heart and soul into raising Marcus with love and care.
Their affection toward each other was just as deep.
Before, he never thought much about it, but at that moment, Charles felt that Marcus was handsome and exceptional.
Charles gazed at Marcus for a long time before placing the thickest stack of documents in front of him.
"Marcus, this is from me."
This stack of documents contained the most important part of his estate.
Charles was worried that after he was gone, Marcus would be left alone and bullied by the Walkers. That
t was the reason why he asked
William and Charlotte to come over first for a discussion.
The Walkers had always been reasonable, but fiercely protective. If Marcus and Natalie were to get into a disagreement, Natalie's brothers wouldn't hesitate to beat him up.
Charles couldn't risk that happening, so he made all the necessary arrangements in advance.
William and Charlotte were both smart people. Since Charles had spelled things out clearly, they understood.
Sure enough, William spoke up.
"Charles, please rest assured. We swear on our lives that the Walkers will never mistreat Marcus. Both of us will treat him as our own son.
"We have a rule within the family, that once we accept someone, we never go back on our word, and we never betray them.
"If something were to happen between Marcus and Natalie, we will remain fair
and just. But honestly, we don't think that day will ever come."
Hearing this, Charles felt relieved. He nodded and handed Marcus a sealed envelope. "Marcus, this contains the most important items I'm leaving to you. Look
at it when you have the time."
He added, "Now then, it's your turn. Do you and Nat have something to tell us?"
Marcus opened his mouth, but his throat felt tight. Everything Charles was saying and doing, it was obvious he was preparing for his end.
"Grandpa Charles, Marcus just proposed to me," Natalie spoke up first. "Now that my parents are here, why don't both families discuss our engagement party? After all, back when Marcus and I weren't on good terms, you were the one protecting mé. śwnovel
"I think you should still be in charge of our engagement. When I marry into the Holden family, you'll still have to continue protecting me, okay? You must make sure that Marcus never gets the chance to bully me, okay?"
Natalie's voice carried a hint of playfulness, and her face was filled with
happiness. She was trying to change the subject, hoping to pull Charles out of his
sorrow.
