Chapter 233
Tears of frustration brimmed in her eyes, but she stubbornly held them back. It was as if, by doing so, she could convince herself that her dad hadn't let her down. He did care about her, just like her mom said, and was just too busy with work. It was not that he didn't love her. But eventually, Charlie couldn't hold on any longer and closed her eyes, letting the tears finally streak down her face. The look of disappointment on her small face was a knife to Charles' heart.
In that moment, it felt like Charles' heart shattered into pieces. The pain in his eyes was almost too much to contain; the scene was just too overwhelming. Any parent with an ounce of humanity would see their child in such distress and feel their heart being ripped apart. Charles was already drowning in guilt over his broken promises to Charlie.
The blow Evelyn dealt to Charles was like a thousand arrows piercing his heart. He couldn't take it anymore and rushed over to Evelyn.
He had seen everything. He watched as Evelyn ran in as soon as Charlie fainted, kneeling beside her, and in a panic, scooped her up and rushed out.
Charles grabbed her shoulders, his eyes red and voice shaky, asking, "Eve, what happened to Charlie? Why did she faint? And why is she vomiting blood?"
This time, Evelyn didn't fight back. She just looked at Charles, her eyes even redder than his. She knew Charles would eventually find out about Charlie's death. When she saw him preparing a surprise for Charlie at the amusement park, she chose that moment to break the news that Charlie was gone.
He had always been in denial about what she said. Since he was going to find out anyway, she decided to tell him in the most devastating way. She was tearing at both Charles' heart and her own.
They say love that comes too late is worth nothing. Wasn't that true for a father's love that was tardy as well?
Evelyn couldn't stop crying from the moment she started playing the video, but it was because she hurt so much for Charlie. Her eyes stayed cold as she watched Charles finally realize what his broken promise's cost. She watched him fall apart emotionally and saw the regret, self-blame, and heartache he felt for Charlie.
With icy calm, she shot back, "Charles, what do you think happened to Charlie? Didn't I tell you?" "Didn't I tell you?" Those words echoed in his mind, bringing back memories he'd brushed aside as unimportant.
Evelyn had told him Charlie was
sick. Thinking back, he remembered when Sandy came back, and Charlie had a fever. The housekeeper had called him, saying Charlie was seriously ill. Worried, he rushed

Charlie was asleep when he got there. Evelyn was nowhere in sight, just the housekeeper keeping watch by Charlie's room. Before he even walked in, he overheard the housekeeper sighing, "Ah, Ms. Evelyn is really something. To get Mr. Charles to notice her and her daughter, she's willing to put her own kid through this, making Charlie pretend to be sick." noveldrama
"And poor Charlie is going along with her mom's plan and is now suffering because of it!"
What do you think?
