Chapter 340: Breakfast tensions II
Lyla
I wanted to puke so bad.
Everything was overwhelming. The scents, the food, the flowers by the window, the small bit of food on Alpha Korin's upper lips, the way one of the Alphas was eating … everything irritated me.
And this nausea…
I stuck my tongue on the roof of my mouth, praying it would pass…
"Why not?" Darren laughed dryly. We need to know if this is going to be our last battle. Everyone knew Aeron was a great Moonsinger—the best ever. He didn't need to beg warriors from other packs to travel halfway around the world to help him fight the Dark One. He did so himself."
"No one is interested in listening to what Aeron did," Ramsey growled. "If you do not want to be here, I'll give you permission to go home with your warriors, Darren. I wouldn't have invited you if you were the last man with a billion army on earth."
"Boys," Circe drummed her hands on the table, shifting everyone's attention to her. "Aren't you too old to still be squabbling? This is not training school. This is a serious matter, Ramsey. We need to be assured that the Moonsinger can lead us into battle. We wouldn't want her retching from a simple meal…"
Most of the Alphas giggled at Circe's words, and I was burning with anger and trying to fight nausea.noveldrama
"And she's not your Luna," Circe added. "gods, I asked around and they told me she's not your Luna, to think I thought she was one. You have no right to impose her on us. If she's offended by Darren's questions, then she shouldn't be a Moonsinger in the first place."
"What did you just say?" Ramsey's tone has grown cold. The coldest I've ever seen him.
No one was talking or eating. Not even Circe.
"I am talking to you, Circe," Ramsey thundered "What did you just say?"
"I said, she's not your Luna, stop imposing her on us. And I want the room opposite yours. The visitor's quarters are too far from everything important. Lenny's house is not to be liked. You agreed to let me stay here."
"You dare come to my pack, insult my Luna…"
"She's not your Luna," Circe said quietly. Her arms crossed her chest as she leaned back, staring at Ramsey belligerently. "If she is to your pack people. I love that for him, but I would not submit to a woman with no legal authority to rule by your side. The only reason why I am putting up with this is because she's a Moonsinger. I don't know how things are run here, but…"
"That's enough! Get out!" Ramsey rose to his feet. His face had gone red with anger, and his voice had lowered considerably, showing that he was nearing his limit.
"What?" Circe asked innocently, ignoring Lenny, who was nudging her to stop talking. "It's not like I'm lying. I'm spitting facts." She turned and looked directly at me. "They're just mates, and if they've been together this long without getting married, they don't love each other as much as they claim."
The dining room fell silent. Even Ramsey looked helpless as he stared at Circe, who had a smirk playing on her lips. The tension finally broke by the sound of me retching again, more violently this time.
I jumped up and rushed out of the room towards the guest toilet.
I heard Nanny murmur, "Excuse me," and then she came towards me. I managed to make it to the toilet.
For three minutes, I was bent over the WC, pouring my stomach out. It was mostly dry heaves and painful as hell. Nanny held back my hair, rubbing my back slowly. After a while, I moved out of the toilet and sat in the hallway, trying to regain strength.
Nanny squatted next to me, cleaning my face with a warm, wet towel. She looked worried.
"Is this right?" I managed. "Why?"
"It's morning sickness, Lyla," she said quietly "I'm just worried that all of this is wrong timing and Ramsey might catch on to this."
"Well, give me something to stop it," I cried.
Nanny sighed and sat next to me, balancing my head on her shoulders as she murmured. "I'm sorry, Ly, but there's nothing we can give you. There's no medication except a few useful herbs to help with the nausea, but you have to go through this…"
I stared at her, hoping this was a colossal joke. "I have to go through this for the rest of the pregnancy? Maybe I shouldn't have…"
"It'll stop eventually, you'll see, but the problem is we don't know how long gone you are. It'll be dangerous to have a pack doctor check you. Do you have anyone you can trust to keep the news about the baby to themselves?" she asked.
"None!" I shook my head. "Lycans are unbelievably loyal to each other. Ramsey will be the first to know if anything happens."
"Lyla!" Ramsey called out my name.
In a flash, he was by my side. "Are you okay?" he asked, touching my forehead. "I sent for a pack doctor…"
"That won't be necessary," Nanny shook her head. "I'll have Terra check her later and have her treated."
"Don't worry, the pack doctor is already here, I'm sure…"
"I'm fine, I swear," I interrupted him again, trying to sound breezy as I rose. "I'll find Terra later. Let's get through this morning's breakfast."
"Are you sure?" He asked, genuinely worried now. "This isn't normal."
"Believe me, it is, but she'll be fine. We can manage her on our own," Nanny said again with a smile.
Deciding I wanted to shift the tension away from me, I decided to change the topic.
"We should go. I'm sure the other Alphas are growing impatient now." He wanted to argue more, but I walked ahead of him. Nanny murmured that she was going to get Terra.
As soon as we reentered the dining room, the conversation died, replaced with hushed tones.
Ramsey turned to Circe and addressed her directly.
"Apologise to Lyla," He demanded, his voice left no room for argument.
Circe blinked in mock surprise. "For what? I merely stated facts. She's not your Luna yet, only your fiancée. She's a Moonsinger – a weak one at that, but no one's is contesting it."
"Apologise," Ramsey repeated, "Or leave the dining hall. You'll be given an hour to pack up and return to your pack without your warriors. I'm sure they all swore an oath to defend the White Moon Throne, and they shall."
"You can't be serious," Circe scoffed. "Over a simple observation? Didn't know the truth hurt so bad. Also, if I were to ever leave, I would go with my warriors. I convinced these Alpha to leave the comfort of their packs to White Mountain and you're just going to send me away because I won't call your mate, Luna?"
"Lyla is my fated mate," Ramsey said, his Alpha authority filling his voice. "Any disrespect toward her is disrespect toward me."
"I'll leave rather than apologise for speaking the truth," Circe declared, pushing back her chair.
Before she could stand, Alpha Winters rose to his feet. "Aside from being Alpha Ramsey's fiancée, she is a Moonsinger. You will apologise for dishonouring her or face punishment according to the old laws."
Circe's eyes widened. She looked to Ramsey for support, but he nodded in agreement with Alpha Winters.
"Apologise, Circe," Ramsey insisted. "Now."
The dining room had gone completely silent. Even the servers had frozen in place, watching the confrontation unfold.
Circe's jaw tightened, but she eventually turned to me. "I apologise if my words offended you, Moonsinger. It was not my intention to disrespect you."
The apology lacked sincerity, but it was enough to satisfy protocol. I nodded my acceptance, though my face remained pale.
"That is not an apology, Circe," Ramsey said quietly. "You were loud a few minutes ago, demanding a room in the pack house. That is the same energy I want you to be on."
"Perhaps we should continue breakfast another time," Ramsey suggested. I knew he was eager to get me away from this situation. Our guests have had a long journey, and the Moonsinger has duties to attend to."
"Of course," Alpha Winters agreed, signalling the others to rise. "We appreciate your hospitality, Alpha Ramsey."
As the Alphas filed out, I noticed Darren lingering, his eyes were fixed on me with an intensity that made me uneasy. When our gazes met, he smiled knowingly before following the others.
Could he tell I was also pregnant? Was I beginning to show?"
Once we were alone, Ramsey turned to me again. "You should see a healer. This isn't normal."
"I'm fine," I insisted. "Just tired and... irritated."
"Circe was out of line," Ramsey acknowledged. "I'll speak with her privately."
"No," I said quickly. "That will only encourage her. She wants your attention, Ramsey."
"Then what do you suggest?"
What do you think?
