Chapter 33
‘That bastard! How dare he kiss me that night and now this? He let me see him making out again with his bitch!’ Emerald exclaimed internally. She couldn’t yell at her husband or show him how angry she was because she already told him that she was going to divorce him.
“Emerald!” Jace exclaimed when he saw her.
“Are you that thick-skinned to come up here?” Esther shouted. “Are you not over Jace yet? He told you before that he doesn’t love you, and you’re just his wife on paper, but I am the one he loves!”
“Shut up, Esther!” Jace shouted, glaring at the woman whose eyes widened in disbelief. Even then, she knew that young Higginson had a thing for Emerald; she hoped he would forget about her, especially after young Morgan left.
“Are you for real?” Esther asked Jace.
“Just leave, you’re not needed here.” Young Higginson replied, giving Esther a warning look.
“Oh, it’s fine. I can come back,” Emerald said before she turned her back on them, but Jace was fast enough to stop her by her arm.
“Stay,” Jace said, looking at Emerald before he turned his gaze to Esther. “Leave now, or I will call the security?” he warned. The woman balled her fists furiously. She never thought that Jace would do that to her. Although she knew he didn’t feel anything towards her anymore, Jace never treated her that way until that moment. And she was pissed because he did it in front of Emerald.
Esther started marching out of the penthouse but never forgot to glare at Emerald, who was raising a brow. “When are you going to let go of my arm?” young Morgan asked when Esther was totally out of their sight.
Jace sighed and said, “Sit down.” Emerald accepted the offer since she didn’t see anything wrong with it. She was there to discuss their project’s development, and she also needed his input. But before she could sit on the single-seater couch, young Higginson pulled her to the other side where he was sitting before she came.
“Are you nuts?” Emerald asked,
“What?”
“You want me to sit there? No, that bitch just sat there.”
“Emerald, we’re here to discuss the project and not to fuck. So spare me with your antics.” Jace replied as if it was nothing. Although he didn’t do anything wrong and had nothing to do with what Esther did, he still knew that she had caught them in an awkward situation, so she didn’t want her to get mad at him even more.
“Antics?” Emerald exclaimed with wide eyes as she rolled her eyes at him. “Whatever you do with your life, I don’t care! Just don’t make me come here just to watch your immorality!” Jace looked at her in disbelief.
“How the hell are we talking about morals now? I was just asking you to sit on that fucking couch so we will be able to discuss this properly.” Seeing how pissed Jace was, Emerald didn’t say more and walked her way to the couch where she had seen her husband and Esther earlier. She didn’t want young Higginson to think she was affected by the scene she just witnessed.
On the other hand, Jace didn’t say more and followed young Morgan. They sat together and started to discuss the problem that Emerald stumbled upon. “I’m going to check your computer,” Young Higginson said.
“It’s in my office.”
“It doesn’t matter,” Jace replied, typing on his laptop. “Give me the authority to look at your computer,” he said, showing her the screen.
“Are you trying to hack it?”
“I said, I need to have a look.” Jace corrected her. Thinking the computer belonged to Jace and it was their project that would be at risk and not hers, Emerald keyed in her password.
“What the” Jace said angrily and glared at Emerald.
“Did you just look at my password?”
“Do you think I’m stupid? You type your password before me and ask me that?” Jace asked and shook his head. He couldn’t believe his wife’s password. ‘I don’t love you bastard! Just what kind of password was that? Does she think I won’t be able to understand it?’
Emerald shut her mouth since she knew that she already sent Jace her message using her password. She knew her husband was not an idiot, not to understand what she meant. On the other hand, Jace just did his job and worked on Emerald’s computer through his laptop.
“This way, it will be easy for you to code.” Said Jace, looking at the laptop screen before averting his gaze to Emerald, who was stunned to see him at work. She thought he looked so handsome, making her mesmerized. “What’s wrong?” young Higginson asked, smirking. “I know I am handsome. I should be so I can match your beauty.” he continued, making young Morgan’s heart flutter.
“Nothing matches my beauty.” She rebutted and got up. “Since we’re done here, I am returning to my office.”
“Are you scared to be left alone with me?” Jace asked,
“Why would I, and what made you think that I am scared to be alone with you?” Emerald asked arrogantly. Although her heart was still beating fast because of what Jace had just said, she still didn’t want him to know that she was really affected.
Jace got closer to her, and to prove she wasn’t scared of him, Emerald didn’t move an inch even though their faces were so close to each other that she could smell his breath when he answered, “I can see it in your eyes, Emerald. You try to distance yourself from me because you feel uneasy.” His voice sounds seductive, and their close proximity weakens young Morgan’s knees.
Emerald swallowed hard and said, “I didn’t want to be in the same place with you, not because I feel uneasy. I didn’t want to see your face that reminded me of how miserable my life was when we were together.” Their eyes were locked as Jace felt sad. He couldn’t say anything and couldn’t even stop Emerald when she started walking away.
“What about this folder?” Jace asked when he noticed that Emerald left it on the center table.
“Oh, that’s for you,” she replied, turned her back to him, and went to the door. Jace took the folder, which he threw immediately after seeing what was inside.
‘Fucking divorce papers.’ he thought angrily. He had not come to his office because he didn’t want to see it. But now he was furious after Emerald brought it to him in person. Jace slumped back on the couch before closing his eyes, massaging his head, and grabbing his hair with both hands. ‘Shit, Emerald. What do I need to do for you to forgive me?’
Emerald left the penthouse and went back to her office to continue working. She tried her best not to think about Jace, whom she thought was furious because of the folder she had left him. Although she decided to introduce young Higginson to their son, she still wanted a divorce because she didn’t know if she could stop herself from falling in love with him again if they were always close.
It was almost 4 in the afternoon when young Morgan received a message from Liam.
Liam: Are you free to talk?Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org exclusive © material.
Emerald: Yeah, why? Is there a problem?
Liam: No,
Emerald: Then why? Did something happen?
Liam: I just miss you and Ace.
Emerald sighed heavily. Although they agreed to be friends, she’s not dense enough not to know Liam’s feelings for her. Now, more than ever, she regrets having a friend-with-benefits relationship with him. She didn’t want them to be strangers because they couldn’t be together. And she knew it was not because she was still married to Jace, but because she didn’t feel anything towards him other than lust. A feeling that should be strange to her, but because of what Jace made her experience before she left, she couldn’t stop looking for that feeling and found it to Liam. To be fair to the man, she was satisfied with him but didn’t love him.
Jace touches, haunting her. Whenever something happened to her and Liam, Emerald would think about how her husband pleasures her, making her want to be more wanton. And after Jace kissed her, she doesn’t think she will still want Liam to touch her.
Liam: Hey, are you still there?
Emerald: Sorry, yes. I’m still here.
Liam: Alright, I thought you ran out of battery.
Emerald: No, I just checked on my computer.
Liam: Anyway, I found out that someone other than you was looking for your nanny as well, so I’m contacting you.
Emerald: What?
She didn’t feel content with texting, so she called Liam, and the man answered on the first ring. “Are you sure about that?” Emerald asked.
“Yes, but I don’t have any idea who he was. I just met someone who was hired to look for your nanny. And you wouldn’t believe my next news.”
“What is it?” Young Morgan asked nervously.
“Your nanny’s real name is Ember Ferguson. The only daughter of the CEO of the Ferguson Telecom in Italy.” Emerald’s mouth hangs open, thinking whether she would believe Liam. She spent all her life with her nanny and doesn’t remember Lucy leaving her alone.
‘What was going on?’ she asked herself.
