“Barton? Why are you still here? I gave explicit instructions to the sanatorium to dismiss you after you gambled away your money and stole from me! How dare you show your face here again?”

Kellan’s brows furrowed as he processed Kinslee’s words.

“Grandma, who did you instruct to fire Barton?”

“Rickey Hopkins, the director of the nursing home!” Kinslee was trembling with fury, her frail frame barely able to stay upright. If Allison hadn’t been holding her up, she might have swung her cane at Barton!

“Back then, when Barton stole my gold bracelet, I regained my senses briefly and told Rickey to fire him. I was crystal clear about it!”

This revelation hit Kellan like a thunderclap. He realized that someone had infiltrated the nursing home.

Kellan’s expression darkened, his presence becoming almost menacing. “Sherman, take a team and investigate immediately. Review every second of the surveillance footage. And make sure you catch Rickey. He doesn’t get to slip away.”

The thought that Rickey, once a trusted ally to Kinslee, could betray her like this made Kellan’s blood boil.

“Yes, I’ll handle it right away!” Sherman replied, just as shocked by this turn of events. But he was certain now that both Rickey and Barton were finished. After all, Kellan had never been one to show mercy where Kinslee was concerned.

Brook, observing the tension, finally sensed something was amiss. “Barton, you were fired for theft?” he asked, fixing a piercing gaze on the doctor. “What exactly is going on here? Speak!”

Nova hadn’t anticipated that Kinslee would regain clarity at this critical moment and still remember what had happened. She opened her mouth to explain, but Barton beat her to it.

Trembling, he collapsed to his knees, unable to meet Brook’s eyes. “I know I was wrong back then. Rickey took pity on me and chose not to fire me. He gave me another chance…” But his stammered excuse rang hollow.

Allison sneered, “He took pity on you and gave you a chance? So, in the Lloyd family’s nursing home, Kinslee’s words hold no weight? It’s just you and Rickey making the rules, is that it?”

She stepped closer, her gaze like a dagger. “You’d better start explaining what really happened.”

Kellan loomed over the kneeling man, his voice ice-cold. “If you don’t tell the truth now, I won’t hesitate to make you disappear from Ontdale.”

Seeing Kinslee ready to testify and knowing Kellan’s people were already investigating, Barton realized there was no escaping the truth. Desperation overtook him as he bowed his head, repeatedly begging for mercy.

“I’m sorry! I shouldn’t have lied! Ms. Clarke didn’t steal anything, it was me! But… but I only did it because…” He faltered, glancing at Nova for help.

To his shock, Nova stepped forward and slapped him hard across the face. The sound echoed loudly in the room, leaving everyone stunned.

“Even if you were struggling to make ends meet, lying like this is inexcusable!” she declared, her voice trembling with feigned indignation.
