Rush the Edge: Chapter 4
Why is she here?
I was too blindsided to ask River when he dropped the news that Daisy was moving here. Even now, after I’ve digested the idea of her, and we’ve come face to face with each other again, I’m still on edge.
When River and I reunited after a few years on different paths, things fell right back into place. It felt like no time had passed at all.
That is not how it feels with Daisy.
I’m a man now—well, sort of. Most of the team would disagree, thanks to the trouble I cause on and offthe ice, but I’m more of a man now than I was six years ago. So tell me why I’m twisted on the inside with her being near? I’ve pushed Daisy so far out of my mind that I’m surprised I even recognized her when I stepped on the elevator.
But I most definitely did, and it’s taking more effort than I’d like to pretend I’m not doused in irritation with her big brother around. Daisy and I have always seemed like we had a brother/sister type of relationship. But on the backside of that, it was something that I can’t put a name to. Then add in the last day we were together, and it’s a fucking storm of angry emotions.
“That’s what you’re wearing?” River’s lip twists with disgust.
I quickly pull my attention to the hallway that leads to Daisy’s new bedroom and land on her.
Hell no.
I’m with River. She needs to change.
If my blood ran hot at the sight of her, everyone else’s will too.noveldrama
“Yeah?” Daisy, with her sun-kissed strawberry-blonde hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail at the nape of her neck, glances at her outfit. “But thanks for making me feel self-conscious.” She rolls her eyes and snatches her purse off the counter. “It’s like high school all over again,” she mumbles.
I snort because I’m a dick. Her baby blues flick to mine so fast I feel them. I raise an eyebrow, challenging her to say something, but she quickly backs down and turns away.
That’s what I thought.
“Let’s just go.” She turns and leaves me and River in the dust.
River shakes his head and rolls his eyes in my direction. I go along with it, but I have no idea what he’s thinking.
Does he think she looks bad in her outfit? Or is he thinking what I’m thinking?
Tight jeans that hug curves that weren’t quite developed when we were teenagers and a sweater that is half falling off her shoulder, showing nothing but soft, smooth skin. Her hair pulled back doesn’t help either. The only thing it does is draw attention to her slender neck, perfect for sinking my teeth into.
I hate that she’s so goddamn perfect.
Irritation crawls up my spine.
After all this time and multiple women in my bed, I still find Daisy tantalizingly alluring.
I hate it.
I hate her.
River is oblivious to the fact that I can hardly look at his sister without clenching my teeth…but she’s not. The shock on her face in the elevator was a window to the fact that she remembers our last interaction just as well as I do.
“Do you even know where we’re going?” River asks, pulling Daisy back by the elbow to stop her brisk walk down the sidewalk.
She has no idea where we’re headed, but that doesn’t stop her from stomping like a brat to get far away from me.
I pause for a split second.
A sick smile curves against my mouth that River doesn’t notice.
We were going to the best pizza shop in town. But I have a better idea.
“I’ll lead the way,” I say casually.
Euphoria’s Edge is the last place I want to go. I don’t frequent strip clubs often, but when I do, this one is low on the list. Emory has all but banned the team from going to his wife’s previous place of employment, The Cat House, but Euphoria’s Edge serves food, so it’ll do.
We’re nearly there when River asks where we’re going.
I peer over my shoulder at him and do a damn good job of pretending Daisy doesn’t exist.
“You’ll see.” I manage to keep my face from showing any sort of amusement.
Their footsteps behind me come to a halt.
“Why did you stop walking?” River asks Daisy.
My stride never slows, even as my mouth begs to curve. I keep heading for the glowing red lights of Euphoria’s Edge while keeping my wits about me.
“Kane!” I stop abruptly from Daisy’s shrill tone.
Gravel crunches under my shoe as I spin. “Yes?”
She crosses her arms over her annoyingly perky chest.
Did those grow during our time apart?
“Where are we going?” Each word drags out of her mouth slowly.
I level her with a bored stare. “To get dinner.”
River glances at the sign above my head and bursts into laughter.
“This is a strip club!” Daisy narrows her pretty blue eyes at me, and I can’t help but feed off of it.
I shrug. “They have great hamburgers.”
“Does it come with a side of crabs too?” She angrily laughs at her own joke. “I’m not going to a strip club for dinner. Pick somewhere else.”
I place my hands in my pockets and rock back on my heels. “I didn’t realize you were such a prude.”
Her jaw drops, and the angry little glare she sends me puts a fire in my blood.
River laughs from beside her. “I can honestly say I’ve never been to a strip club with my sister…” He heads toward the door. “But I guess there’s a first for everything.”
“I am not going into a strip club with my brother!” she snaps.
“You act like I haven’t seen you getting half-fucked by some frat boy before.” River snorts. “Consider this payback.”
Excuse me, what the hell did he just say?
Daisy stomps her foot and stares after her brother. “I didn’t know you were there! That’s not fair.”
I can’t seem to get the image of her being fucked by some guy out of my head while they continue to argue back and forth. My shoulders tense with something I refuse to acknowledge, and I quickly head for the door to the club.
The burger may taste like cardboard, but at least I can stare at the topless women dancing while I eat instead of Daisy and her pretty glares in my direction.
What do you think?
