Rush the Edge: Chapter 37
I bit off more than I can chew.
Being alone in my apartment, filling my head with all sorts of empowering thoughts is one thing. Coming face to face with Kane and suffocating in the energy that surges between us is another.
My heart beats quicker every time he grabs a new girl to dance with. His palm, the same one that caressed my body like I was the most desirable thing on the planet, wraps around some blonde’s waist, and although they’re just dancing, I’m brimming with jealousy. It’s not the good kind of jealousy either. It’s the kind that will break my heart in two if I let it.
Searching for a good candidate to dance with, I spot a face I recognize.
Malaki? And Reese?
Relief slips down my spine at the sight, even if I am confused. I rush to them and envelop her in a hug that’s more like a death grip. “I’m so glad to see you.”
She pulls back, those honey-colored eyes softening. “You okay? What’s wrong?”
I nod and smile. “I’m fine. I’m just happy to see a familiar face. Wait, what are you doing here?”
All of a sudden, Malaki slips into the conversation and puts his arm around Reese’s shoulders. “I convinced her to come out with me.”
Reese’s face twists. “If requesting several Uber drivers until you get me as your driver is your way of convincing, then okay.”
Malaki grins.
“I have to get back to work,” she says, shoving Malaki’s arm off her shoulders. “Malaki said you were in here, so I wanted to say hi real quick before getting back to work.”
After giving Reese another hug, she heads for the door, where Malaki follows closely behind. They look to be in a heated conversation, except Malaki is half-smiling. I watch him open his phone to show her something, and before I know it, she’s heading back over to me.
“What are you doing?” I ask.
She flips her warm brown locks over her shoulder and pulls me by the hand toward the bar. “I guess I’m staying.”
A bartender appears in front of us, bypassing most of the other customers, and takes her order. I decline another drink and lean against the bar. “What about work?”
Reese sighs, glancing at Malaki from across the dance floor. I keep my attention far away, knowing that Kane is probably getting dry humped by now.
“He…” Reese purses her lips before leaning close to me. “He just paid me more than I’d make Ubering to stay.”
My jaw drops. “What?”
She rolls her eyes. “It’s a long story. But if I’m being paid to stay, I’d be stupid to leave, right?”
“Right. And not to mention…” I quickly glimpse over my shoulder, and a fire erupts in my stomach when Kane’s steely jaw catches my eye right away. There’s a girl dancing in front of him with her arm winding up his chest. “I could use an ally.”
I turn back toward Reese, and she’s smiling at me. “You’ve got it. Let’s dance.”
She pulls me onto the dance floor while scoffing at Malaki as he raises his glass to Reese, like he’s proud of her or something. I laugh and put my back to my brother, who is clearly having no issues letting loose, and grab onto Reese’s shoulders. We start to dance to the tempo of the song, and it doesn’t take long for my gaze to snag Kane’s through the sea of people.
My throat closes when I see him staring directly at me.
Not even a second passes before he skims his nose against his victim’s neck. He whispers something in her ear, and suddenly, she grinds herself even faster against his front.
With my eyes still pinned to Kane, I reach my hand out and grab the first willing guy I can find. He replaces Reese, who happily moves to the other side of the bar to avoid Malaki.
I turn and press against the tall man behind me. His hands fall to my hips, and he moves them back and forth to the song. “You’re gorgeous,” he says, brushing his mouth against my ear. “I’m Nick, by the way.”
I hate that his sultry whisper does nothing to my body.
The only thing I can think of is Kane. I’m desperate to see if he is watching me with a jealous rage, like I was just doing to him.
In reality, neither of us should care or even engage in this stupid game we’re playing, yet here we are.
Too eager to catch his eye again, I spin and put my arms around Nick’s neck. His green eyes are vibrant and stand out against his olive-colored skin, even beneath the strobing lights. But they do nothing to spark any excitement inside of me.
My attention slips off to the left for the briefest of seconds, and my heart crashes to the floor.
Kane and the girl are both gone.
I drop my hands and spin around. My shoulders fall.
“You okay?” Nick asks.
“Um…” I nod. “Yeah, I just…” I spin again, in search of the bathroom so I can berate myself in private for the way my chest aches with hurt.
A soft gasp slips from my lips when I spot him.
With his broad shoulder propped against the wall near the darkened hall beneath the neon bathroom sign, he raises an eyebrow at me.
He’s asking me if I’ve had enough.
I’m scared to say no, but I’m afraid to say yes too.
Nick is waiting for me to finish my sentence, but I can’t figure out what to say. I search for River in the crowd, and when I find his back toward me, I take it as a sign.
The moment I decide to head for Kane, a path opens up. My pulse quickens, thrumming in various places on my body. The closer I get, the faster it goes, only for it to stop altogether when Kane turns and disappears.
I continue moving in his direction, but there’s fear in the back of my head that slows my steps. Am I about to stumble upon something I can’t unsee?
Shit. What am I doing?
I’ve passed the line to the bathroom, darkness enveloping me the farther I move down the quiet hallway.
My hand skims the sticky wall as I turn the corner, and I ram into something hard.
“Good choice.” Kane pins me against the wall, his warm, malty breath fanning against my face. “I would’ve hated to lead that girl on even further because you were too stubborn to call it quits.”
The beating of my heart is louder than the thumping club music. I press myself farther into the wall, hoping it’ll give me enough backing to think rationally, but it doesn’t. Kane edges closer, his strong scent putting me in a daze. Sharp prickles of need are everywhere, but I’m afraid to make the first move.
Kane’s hands find me in the dark. “That guy is lucky you decided to give up.” His voice is throaty. “Otherwise, he’d probably be in the hospital.”
My breathing is sharp and quick. He presses his knee in between mine, and all I want to do is sink down onto it. The rough calluses on his palm glide against my bare arm in featherlight strokes, leaving a trail of goosebumps behind. When his hand lands at the base of my neck, he pushes my hair behind my shoulder, and I let out a shaky breath.noveldrama
“What are we doing?” His touch feels so good.
Without my permission, my head slowly falls to the side, giving Kane better access to my neck.
“I told you I always get what I want.” His mouth hovers over my pulse, hot puffs of breath coating my skin. “And what I want is you.”
Heat pools at the apex of my thighs. I push my breasts against his chest, desperate for the touch.
“Kane.” Saying his name is the only warning I’ll give.
“Do you know that I’ve never stopped wanting you?” he asks quietly.
My stomach dips, and without hesitation, I lift one of my hands and grab onto his scruffy chin. I bring his face to mine. “Then prove it.”
Time slows.
Kane’s movements are steady and sure as he pushes my hand from his face and grips my chin with force.
His mouth covers mine, and I open willingly.
I jump up, and he catches me with ease. I wrap my legs around his waist and give in to the pleasure. His tongue slips past my lips, and I make a noise that doesn’t go unnoticed.
“You make me wild, little devil,” he says before kissing me again.
I’m putty in his palm.
I make him wild. He makes me desperate.
His silent kissing demands I follow all his cues and commands.
“Open.” Kane’s palm nudges my legs farther apart, keeping one underneath me to hold me up.
I do exactly as he says. My dress bundles around my hips, giving free rein to Kane’s fingers. One brushes against my slit, and my legs shake.
“No more games,” he rasps.
Suddenly, my feet are placed on the floor, and Kane drops to a knee. Through the dark, I see how he angles his face to stare up at me. His hand slowly glides up my smooth leg, and I’m a mess.
Goosebumps fly to the surface, and my nipples tighten. Cool air floats in between my legs, brushing against my wet panties. Kane hooks a finger beneath the fabric and pulls them aside. “This is mine, Daisy.”
A whimper falls free from my mouth when his finger runs against my seam.
“Look at how wet you are for me, baby.”
His voice is low and gritty.
I move my hips against his teasing finger, wanting more.
“You’re just as greedy as I am,” he mutters.
His finger disappears, and I panic. I open my mouth to whine, but nothing comes out when I feel the quick flick of his tongue against my clit.
“God.” I shiver.
He licks and sucks, placing soft kisses against my inner thigh every so often.
“Ride my face,” he murmurs from in between my legs. “I’ve got you.”
His hands grip me around the waist hard, hoisting me up so I don’t fall. I move my hips up and down, chasing the high. One bite of his teeth against my clit, and I’m freefalling. A whimper slips from my lips as I rub against his scruffy face, still just as needy as before.
Kane pops up from his knees and wipes his face with the back of his hand. “You’re so goddamn addicting,” he groans. “Come on. We’re leaving.”
He pulls me by the hand after adjusting my dress back to its rightful position. He pushes on a hidden exit door, and the cool evening air washes over our heated bodies.
“Where are we going?” I ask, attempting to keep up.
“To my bed.”
I pull on his hand when he’s halfway out the door. “Wait! What about River? What will he think if we both just leave?”
Kane’s chest rises quickly. The moon gives off its light to show me the carnal look in his eyes. I’m not sure he cares about River at the moment.
“Well, I’m not fucking you in the hallway of a club, Daisy. So leaving is our next best option.”
The thought turns me on, and he notices.
Kane clenches his eyes and squeezes my hand at the same time. “Don’t look at me like that. I’m seconds from filling you now, regardless of where we are.”
I tug on Kane’s hand.
We’re playing with fire either way: leave and make River question our whereabouts, or stay and potentially have someone stumble upon us.
“I’m not that same innocent teenager you once knew.” The door slams shut behind Kane, hiding us in the dark. “I don’t need some fluffy bed and a gentle hand.”
“What exactly are you implying, little devil? You want me to fuck you filthy? Right here, right now?” He’s calling my bluff.
My fingers find the button of his jeans right away. He makes no effort to stop me when I start to unbutton them.
“That’s exactly what I’m saying, Kane.”
What do you think?
