Chapter 144 Nurturing Care and Unexpected Gifts
Avery had no idea what he was up to, but she picked up the lamp nevertheless. The faint light of the
lamp swayed left and right with Frank's footsteps, illuminating her surroundings.
He took her to the kitchen, tied an apron around his waist, and quickly prepared the ingredients. He
mixed the rice with eggs, peas, and bacon.
The man towered above her, with only the dim light from the lamp to guide him as he expertly chopped
vegetables and stirred-fried the dish.
Flames leaped up from the bottom of the pan, licking at its surface and casting a dancing light onto
Frank's metallic mask.
Avery was reminded of Jacob, who would make her a bowl of spaghetti or a plate of fried rice
whenever she was hungry, no matter how late at night it was.
In no time, the fragrant rice was served in front of her, and Frank added some vegetables to decorate
the plate.
"Dig in. No matter how long you can survive, I hope it's longer than you think."
Tears welled up in Avery's eyes as she lowered her head to eat.
The stranger's care felt like a giant blue whale, opening its huge mouth to engulf her and making her
temporarily forget the betrayal that she had experienced.
Frank's knobby fingers gently rubbed her head. "Even if there is only one day left, live well."
"Yeah."
The following days were simple yet happy. Avery accepted Frank's assignment to gather the children
on the island and teach them how to read.
Ethan was always nearby, pulling the tail of a kitten, waiting patiently for her class to finish so he could
follow her around.
"Mommy, pick me up," he said as he opened his arms with a smile.
At first, Avery corrected him and asked him to call her "Auntie". But as time went on, she got used to it.
"Honey, let me check on you. Did you fall again? Your face is dirty."
Avery gently cleaned his face. Ethan giggled and kissed her cheek.
"Avy, can you tell me why planes can fly in the sky?"
"Avy, is it true that people can dive deep into the sea? Won't they suffocate?"
"Avy..."
The children on the island were all very kind to her. Avery had already planned everything out. They
have been living on this island for many years, and they were technically illegal immigrants.
The first step was to purchase the small island to prevent outsiders from developing it and destroying
their way of life.
The second step was to authenticate everyone's identity.
And lastly, to send the children to school on the mainland.
With a new purpose, Avery felt that living was not as difficult as before. This text is © NôvelDrama/.Org.
The New Year was approaching, and Frank went out of the island to buy supplies.
Carl and Randy waited at the shore, eagerly anticipating his return. When Frank came back with a boat
full of goods, they jumped up and joyfully helped him carry everything home.
Aside from necessities, there were fruits, snacks, and even diapers and milk powder.
Avery was surprised. "Why did you buy these things?"
"So, you don't have to change diapers at night," said Frank as he handed her a package. "And these
are for you."
Avery blushed when she saw the package. It contained some undergarments, a set of skincare
products, and hand cream.
This man was taciturn, but he was more attentive than anyone else. He even asked her about her
usual medication before leaving.
"Are these what you take?"
"Yes, thank you."
Frank awkwardly turned around. "No worries. I'm just giving you some interest in advance."
