Chapter 1
Chapter 1
“Ms. Celeste Campbell, have you managed to contact any of your family?” Exclusive content from NôvelDrama.Org.
The nurse must’ve asked this a million times already. Celeste glanced at her phone, but still no answer from Liam Reed.
A terrible pile–up happened on a J City overpass up north. A public bus flipped over and fell into the river, sending dozens of injured people to the hospital. Family members were rushing to their loved ones, but hers remained unreachable.
The horrifying scene of the accident still lingered in her mind. Yet, that fear was nothing compared to the coldness she felt. at this moment.
She suddenly thought, if she died in the accident today, would there even be anyone to claim her body?
“Ma’am?” The nurse asked.
Celeste snapped back to reality, her face pale. With a raspy voice, she asked desperately, “I’m sorry, he must be busy. Can I sign the papers myself?”
“Sorry, but without a family member’s signature, we advise you to stay for observation. Concussions can be mild or severe, and we have to be responsible for your safety.” The nurse said.
Celeste pursed her lips, “I’ll try again.”
She took her phone and left the room. As she walked by, she heard two nurses pushing an instrument cart, one of them saying. “Do you know who’s in bed sixteen?”
“Who?”
“Sydney Denton! The big star! She’s the lead actress in that popular TV show Mystery Lover!”
“Oh my God! Is she badly injured?”
“Just a few scratches on her arm. But being a big celebrity who relies on their looks to make a living, she’s definitely more dramatic than us ordinary people. If I were that pretty, I’d insure every inch of my body!”
“Right! I also saw her boyfriend earlier! The one caught with her at Grandview Villa not long ago!”
Celeste stopped in her tracks.
“That guy is tall, handsome, and looks rich. Most importantly, he treats Sydney so well. He rushed here as soon as the accident happened and stayed with her the entire time. Why do some women just seem to be born winners?”
Their voices faded away as they moved further. Celeste clenched her phone, her fingertips turning white.
Outside the ward, Liam was talking to Sydney’s agent. Although there was some distance between them, Celeste felt like he was expressing anger on Sydney’s behalf.
Celeste took out her phone and called Liam.
Liam hesitated for a moment, looked at the phone, and his frown deepened.
He answered, annoyed, “What is it?”
“Where are you?” Celeste’s voice was a little hoarse, fragile.
Liam didn’t notice. He coldly replied, “At the company.”
“Has Reed Group ventured into the hospital business?” Celeste asked.
Liam stopped walking, his face looked even darker, “Are you following me?”
Celeste wanted to laugh, but her eyes filled with tears.
“Mr. Reed is too flattering,” she paused, then continued, “I saw someone who looked like you on the news and just thought I’d check.”
Liam replied, “Boring,” and hung up, then turned and entered the room.
Celeste gave a bitter smile, thinking how pathetic she was for calling and humiliating herself when she already knew the truth.
In the end, Trisha Colton picked her up Celeste didn’t want to bother her friend if she had any family to contact, as she didn’t want to showcase her lousy life to others. Whether it was mockery or pity, it would only make her embarrassed.
“Where’s Liam?” Trisha asked.
“He’s at the company.” Celeste thought, well, that was what he told her.
Trisha gripped the steering wheel and cursed, “What a bastard! His wife’s in an accident, and he doesn’t even show up. What’s the point of making so much money? To buy himself a coffin?”
Celeste joked, “Or maybe to buy me one.”
