Charmaine paused, "He did help me a lot, I won't deny that. I came to rely on him somewhat, but after he confessed his feelings and wanted a relationship, I turned him down and kept my distance.

Emyr's voice cut sharply through the silence, his eyes darkening with intense curiosity.

Charmaine pursed her lips, choosing her words carefully. "We come from different worlds, and I didn't want to get too involved."

She looked down, her voice softening, "Back then, I was a mess, not worthy of anyone's affection."

Seeing her vulnerable side, which she rarely showed, stirred something in Emyr. He felt an urge to comfort her but hesitated, retaining his usual distant demeanor. "You think too highly of that boy. Feeling unworthy of him yet brave enough to be with me. Do you have a brain, or don't you?"

He regretted his words almost immediately.

Charmaine scoffed, misinterpreting his surprise as skepticism. "I was making tens of thousands, sometimes hundreds of thousands, all by myself to cover my grandma's medical bills. He just had his family's money, was all thumbs at work, and even caused me to lose wages. His riding skills were abysmal. Without his family's status, he would have been unnoticed at the races."

And on top of that, he was unreliable and untrustworthy. What gave him the right to think so highly of himself and expect her to like him?

She shook her head dismissively, "Falling for him would have been my loss, not the other way around!"

Emyr was still trying to sort out her feelings, not expecting that Charmaine's resilience would impress him so deeply.

She had the strength to heal her own wounds, which only increased his respect for her.

Hadn't she been nothing but supportive?

Feeling utterly unjustified, Charmaine expressed her frustration, "I'm being completely misunderstood here. I haven't done or said anything wrong, and somehow, you're the one who's jealous for no reason."

"I was just speaking offhand," he deflected quickly.

"No, you're definitely jealous!"

Outside the study, Alfred, Tad, Celeste, and several house staff were lined up in

the corridor.

They all strained their ears, catching snippets of the argument inside,noveldrama
