Valencia shivered in fear. She glanced back at Jimmy and Keith.

“We’re taking Wendy with us. You can’t stop us from taking her. She’s got nothing to do with you. This hospital is outrageously expensive, and we don’t have the money to pay for her stay,” Valencia said. She swallowed her fear as she pointed at Wendy.

Wendy’s face turned ashen. If she left with them, it would be the end for her. But she knew her family all too well and couldn’t let them drag Simona down with her.

Just as she felt she had no choice but to leave with them, Skylar said coldly, “The police have already opened an investigation. The costs of her hospital stay suspects and their families.”

Wendy immediately snapped back to her senses. “I can’t go with you. I need to seek justice for myself.” Belonging © NôvelDram/a.Org.

“Justice? What justice? You’ve already been raped. Do you want to make it public and humiliate yourself further? The most important thing now is to get compensation. Isn’t that what you want?” Valencia seethed, her teeth grinding.

All these years, she felt like she had raised nothing but a burden.

“This is our family matter. How we handle it is none of your concern. You can sue us all you want, but stay out of our business,” Keith added, avoiding Joe’a gaze. His words were directed at Skylar an Simona

Their shamelessness was enough to shock anyone’s sense of morality.

Wendy tightly gripped Simona’s hand, biting her lips hard. She knew that no one was going to help her. Throughout her life, she had never received help

Even when neighbors saw her being beaten, they only frowned. Sometimes, if her cries were too loud and her pain too intense, they might come over and offer a word or two of advice.

But their advice only led to her being punished more severely.

And all her suffering was simply because she was a girl. They couldn’t find a buyer willing to pay the price they were satisfied with.

Just when Wendy thought her situation was completely hopeless, Skylar, who was protecting Simona, spoke up to help her once more. She said, “Wendy just turned 18 this year. She’s of legal age now, and you have no right to dictate her choices.”

18…

She almost forgot that she was already 18. She had just celebrated her 18th birthday. She was officially an adult now. The perverse control of her twisted

Wendy looked up at Skylar, her eyes reddened but now holding a glimmer of hope.

“What does being 18 matter? She’s my daughter. Since I gave birth to her, whether she’s 18, 28, or 38, she

has to do as I say. Even if I beat her to death today, no one can stop me,” Valencia shouted.

She was too ignorant, legally bound, and utterly immoral.

Skylar felt a familiar suffocating sensation, reminiscent of what she had felt dealing with the Williams family in her past life. Perhaps, having faced such adversity herself, she didn’t want to see anyone else mired in such a swamp of helplessness.

She glanced at the bruised Wendy, then at the sobbing Simona, and finally turned her gaze to Joe. “They just slandered Simona and tried to threaten me. Can we get a lawyer to sue them?”

“Yes,” Joe replied, his gaze settling on her. He noticed the pain flickering in her eyes and felt a pang of sympathy.

He knew Skylar had been mistreated by the Williams family before. But he never considered how deep the psychological scars left by those people had been for Skylar.

Joe collected his thoughts and looked up toward a short distance. He said, “Come over here.”

Only then did everyone notice that a few hospital security guards had arrived at the far end of the hallway. The security guards, hearing Joe’s call, promptly strode over.
