Chapter 496: How could she not feel sorry for you?
"Gillian? What are you doing here?" Alaric was genuinely surprised to see her standing outside the door.
"I know you are staying here, so I come to find you." Gillian said as she walked into the
room.
'Did Silas tell her? Probably, since Silas had been with her all day.' Alaric thought.
"Alaric, why are you staying at a hotel instead of going home?"
How was he supposed to answer that?
"Did you have a fight with your wife?" Even if Alaric didn't answer, the reason was pretty obvious.
Alaric was really frustrated. It felt like all the dignity he had in the first half of his life had been completely lost in the past few days.
"Why does staying at a hotel have to mean I had a fight with my wife?" Although it was true, Alaric had to hide it. "I just felt like staying at a hotel, so I did."
Hearing this, Gillian laughed and asked, "Do you even believe yourself when you say that? Although I don't have any marriage experience, I've seen other people's marriages. Couples fight, some ignore each other, some make the husband sleep on the couch, and some even kick the husband out. It's rare, but your wife seems pretty strong-willed."
"Correction, I chose to stay at the hotel myself. It has nothing to do with my wife, OK?" "OK," Gillian nodded. "I'm also staying at this hotel, on this floor."
"You're staying at this hotel too?"
"What else?" Gillian shrugged helplessly. "I don't have a home in Arizona. I was thinking of staying at your big villa for a couple of days, but it turns out you got kicked out yourself."
"If you want, I can arrange something for you. You don't have to stay at a hotel."
The Knight Manor was still vacant, and Alaric had other properties under his name. Arranging a place for Gillian was simple.
"I've already checked in, so there's no need to trouble you. Thanks." Gillian refused with a smile.
Since that was the case, Alaric had nothing more to say.
"Alaric, you haven't eaten yet, right? I see the hotel's restaurant is pretty good. Want to grab a meal together?" Gillian invited Alaric.
"I've already eaten," Alaric replied. "If you're hungry, you can order room service."
Gillian knew he hadn't eaten at all; he just didn't want to have a meal alone with her. Was he afraid of being misunderstood?
Gillian didn't say anything, just looked at him with a pained expression. "Alaric, you're even thinner than when you were in the army. I heard that serious injury left you with severe aftereffects. The treatment over the years must have been very painful, right?"
"Is there any treatment that isn't painful?" Alaric answered calmly. "But it's all over now. I'm fully recovered."
"Even if you're recovered, you still need to take care of yourself. This hotel may have good facilities, but it's not the same as home."
Gillian paused for a moment, then continued, "Why doesn't she care about you at all?" Alaric was slightly stunned.
"You just recovered, and she lets you stay at a hotel alone without any concern. Isn't she afraid your old injuries might relapse?"
"I told you, I chose to stay at the hotel myself. It has nothing to do with my wife."
Alaric emphasized again, "I owe my recovery to her. She's a doctor and knows my condition better than anyone. If my health wasn't suitable for staying at a hotel, she wouldn't have let me."
"I didn't say anything. Why are you so worked up?"
Seeing Alaric's reaction, it was clear he loved Stellan very much.

"Alaric, you started following my dad when you were eighteen. You've been around since I can remember. Isn't it fair to say we grew up together?
Even though we're not related by blood, we're closer than family. Now that you've just recovered and are staying at a hotel alone, as family, isn't it fair for me to be concerned?"
"It's fair, but your concern is a bit unnecessary," Alaric replied. "You grew up in the military too, so you've seen a lot. On missions, even when covered in injuries, we had to keep going. There was no need for concern then. Now, this isn't the military. I'm a grown man, comfortably staying in a hotel. What's there to be concerned about?"
Gillian was momentarily speechless.
"Alright, didn't you say you were going to eat? Go ahead. You need to eat well to keep your brain sharp," Alaric changed the subject.
"I told you, I graduated already..." Gillian pouted. "Fine, if you won't treat me, I'll go eat by myself."
"Go on." Alaric voiced with a smile, waving her off.
It was clear he wanted Gillian to leave. Although she was reluctant, she had no choice but to go.
After Gillian left, Alaric returned to pick up his book, focusing intently.
It didn't seem like much time had passed before the doorbell rang again. Alaric was exasperated. 'Was Gillian back?'
He went to open the door, but it wasn't Gillian. It was room service.
"I didn't order anything."
"It was ordered for you by Ms. Emberlyn in room 8026. Enjoy your meal."
The staff placed the meal in the room's dining area and then respectfully left.
Alaric glanced at it and found a note from Gillian.
[If no one else cares, you should care for yourself. Eat on time!]
Seeing the note, Alaric was really exasperated. Was his lie that easy to see through?
He had said he ate, but Gillian still didn't believe him!
Another night. Stellan now dreaded the nights the most. The arrival of night was a nightmare for her.
She still didn't dare to turn off the lights. After taking two sleeping pills, she closed her eyes. Perhaps because she had never taken sleeping pills before, they worked well, and she quickly fell asleep.
The next morning, Stellan grabbed her phone to check. It was still empty. After eating a simple breakfast, she left.
She still had to go to the construction site. Only by keeping herself truly busy could she avoid overthinking.
Alaric had just finished washing up when the doorbell rang again. It was breakfast ordered by Gillian.
"Alaric, good morning!" Gillian walked over, full of energy, and waved at him.
"I'm not a child. If I'm hungry, I'll eat. You don't need to order for me, OK?" Alaric was utterly exasperated.noveldrama
"You're not a child, but you're more troublesome than one. Alright, hurry up to eat. You have to go to work after this. I won't bother you. I'm going to explore Arizona today." With that, Gillian waved at him again and walked away.
Alaric looked at the breakfast, then at his phone, and sighed again.
Staying at a hotel alone was already uncomfortable, and now he was in the same hotel as Gillian.
"Stellan, when will you finally let me go home?"
What do you think?
