Chapter 79 I Will Live Well With Him
The reason the bottle of medicine was seen by Alicia was actually that Edmond deliberately opened Melissa's luggage, making it easy for her to discover.
It was a last resort.
Unexpectedly, it had to be employed in the end.
What surprised him was that after learning about the condition, Alicia remained unusually calm, not struggling in his embrace, not crying or making a fuss-very composed.
Edmond allowed her to hold him for quite a while.
Until Edmond's heart began to race, he let go of Alicia.
He lifted her chin with his hand and found that she had shed only one tear and then ceased crying.
He was taken aback and was about to offer some comforting words when Alicia calmly moved away from him, returning to Melissa's side and embracing her.
"It's okay, Mom."
Trembling, Melissa cried in Alicia's embrace. "If I don't wake up... you must live well with Edmond, Okay?"
"Yes."
She spoke calmly, devoid of any emotional fluctuations.
Edmond had seen many similar situations. When a patient passed away, some family members would calmly listen to the bad news, not crying or making a scene, following the nurses to handle the subsequent procedures.
Some believed that such a calm reaction was due to the family members not having a deep emotional connection with the patient and not feeling much emotional upheaval. However, the reality was quite the opposite.
In times of excessive sorrow, the brain would protect the body by automatically blocking pain signals, causing the individual to fall into a numb emotional state, appearing calm to outsiders while inside. They were extremely painful.
After Melissa's emotions stabilized, she grew drowsy. Alicia told her to go back to the tent and rest.
Emerging from the tent, she began to quietly make a fire, preparing to grill the fish.
She did it as if nothing had happened.
"I'll do it."
Edmond walked over to help, and she didn't say anything. The two of them silently worked together to prepare the fire.
He purposely didn't add salt and deliberately didn't use a knife to slice open the fish, thinking she would point out his mistakes.
However, nothing happened.
Alicia merely watched quietly as Edmond grilled the fish on the fire.
In the end, Edmond took the initiative.
"Are you angry with me?"
Alicia shook her head without saying a word.
He closely observed her expressionless face, unable to discern any other information from it.
"Why won't you talk to me?"
Again, Alicia shook her head.
He didn't ask further.
After grilling the fish, Edmond retrieved a self-heating meal from his bag, along with some roasted sweet potatoes and sausages.
Despite previously claiming not to know how to cook, he was now quite adept at it.
However, Alicia still stared vacantly ahead, unable to muster the enthusiasm to enjoy the meal.
By the time the meal was ready, dusk was approaching. Melissa woke up, and the three of them sat together to eat.
The atmosphere wasn't too bad, and it was just lacking in conversation topics.
The night view by the lake was beautiful, the bright moon and stars shining above. Alicia and Melissa sat side by side.
Edmond said he was going to the convenience store to buy things, leaving the space for the mother and daughter to be alone.
Holding Alicia's hand, Melissa seemed on the verge of tears.
"Licia, Mom is reluctant to part with you. But seeing how well Edmond treats you, I feel relieved."
Alicia lowered her head, gripping her mother's hand tightly.
"I will live well with him."
Her voice was soft.
She didn't know if Melissa had heard her.
"I have no regrets. As long as you're happy, I'm content."
"When is the surgery?"
"Next week, arranged by Edmond. But it seems he can't perform the surgery himself. He mentioned there's a rule that prohibits operating on close relatives."
Previously, when Alicia and Edmond were not yet married, Melissa wasn't considered a close relative to him.
But now that Melissa had become his mother-in-law, he couldn't perform the surgery himself.
Alicia nodded, indicating her understanding.
"At that time, I'll accompany you to the hospital and wait outside."
"Alright."
Everything had calmed down.
At least on the surface, it appeared calm.
Edmond had spent quite some time at the convenience store, only finding out about the company's trouble when he saw the trending hashtags of Diane.
