Chapter 50 

It was as if someone had sucked all the air from the room. Madelyn’s tear–streaked face tightened with surprise as she registered Andrew’s

words.

Natalie was his cousin. Now that she thought about it, she vaguely. remembered the story about his aunt who eloped with a man and pissed Athena off to high heaven. As such, Madelyn had never met. Andrew’s scandalous aunt despite having grown up with the Miller family.

Just before Madelyn left the Miller residence, a 14–year–old girl was brought to the house along with the tragic news of Andrew’s aunt’s death. She barely remembered that meeting given how brief it was, but the girl must have been Natalie.

Drawing a sharp breath, Madelyn asked, “So, Natalie is your first cousin, related to you by blood?”

“Yes. You don’t often see her coming by the Miller residence because, Grandma won’t tolerate her presence because of what my aunt did,” Andrew explained.

Madelyn was shocked to hear this. It didn’t make sense for Athena to sideline her biological granddaughter. If she could accept Elena with open arms and forgive Madelyn for her past behavior, surely she could warm up to Natalie.

Deciding to drop the subject of Athena and Andrew’s aunt altogether, Madelyn surveyed Andrew with a baffled look. “And you fired Natalie’s manager just like that?”

“Her manager’s assistant,” Andrew corrected breezily.

Madelyn mumbled fretfully, “She was still a member of Natalie’s management team.“.

Would Natalls hold a grudge against her for getting her manager’s assistant fired? It seemed Andrew’s misguided good intentions had eamed her yet another enemy. Such was the fate of being married to a blockhead.

As if reading her thoughts, Andrew pinched her nose. “I won’t stand for anyone disrespecting you.”

He had seen the contempt with which Lilian regarded Madelyn earlier. He knew Lilian would only give Madelyn a hard time in the future if he didn’t fire her. Anyone who made or had the potential to make Madelyn unhappy was an eyesore to him.Material © of NôvelDrama.Org.

Madelyn froze and decided to drop the matter entirely. “Uh, I brought some pastries for you. Would you like to try some?”

She was desperate to change the subject after her embarrassing fit. She had assumed Natalie was some conniving character lusting after Andrew, but she turned out to be his first cousin instead.

Andrew hid his smile as he watched Madelyn fumble with the pastry

boxes.

She had bought the pastries during her afternoon tea with Carrie. At the thought of this, she said, “I met with Carrie earlier.”

“I know,” Andrew said.

“She said you ought to watch out for Elijah. It seems he hasn’t been suffering abroad like we were made to believe.”

Madelyn figured she should give Andrew a heads–up about his eldest brother, just in case.

He eyed her solemnly but kept his tone casual. “Did something happen?”

“I had Carrie publish some articles on Easton, but Jackson warned her to back off. He was acting on Elijah’s orders,” Madelyn explained.

Chapter 50

If Elijah had fallen on hard times abroad, she doubted he could have any sway with someone like Jackson.

“Don’t worry about this. I know what to do,” Andrew reassured.

“Alright.” She did not continue the conversation after that.

Andrew took a bite of one of the pastries and frowned. It was too sweet for his taste. Seeing this, Madelyn asked, “Don’t you like it? I’ve seen influencers rave about this. I wouldn’t have bought them for you if I thought they were bad.”

“You can have them,” he said indulgently as he shoved the box toward her. He clearly did not have an affinity for sweets.

Madelyn was happy to have more for herself. In her previous life, she had felt so trapped by her marriage that there was little she enjoyed about life. Desserts were one of the few things she held dear during those dark times.

She had come to the company much earlier than expected. Andrew had two more meetings to attend before he could call it a day. As such, she waited for him in his office. She grew drowsy after having. too many pastries and dozed off in the office lounge at 4:00 pm.

It was almost dark when Madelyn awakened to the feeling of having something shoved into her mouth. She looked up and met Andrew’s obsidian eyes. She was shocked at first, but after that, she groggily kissed him back.
