The next morning, Madelyn was surprised to find Easton still here. He was supposed to have moved out last night. When Athena inquired about his presence, the maids working in his annex reported, “Mr. Easton was down with a high fever last night, so he stayed.”

A big, grown man like him brought down by a high fever? As if anyone could believe something so ridiculous.

Madelyn shot Easton a condescending look, only for him to return it with a lovesick one. She might have vomited if she weren’t in Athena’s company. For all his acting, it was a shame Easton hadn’t taken up a career as a professional skank.

“Maddie and I will be going to the company after this. We won’t be coming home tonight,” Andrew said,

Andrew took a sip of milk and asked nonchalantly, “Grandma, what do you plan to do with your shares in the company?” 

Everyone at the dining table looked at him in surprise after he brought up the topic of Athena’s shares.

Grace was perplexed. “Andrew, what are you saying?”

Andrew explained, “Grandma’s not young anymore. Correct me if I’m wrong, but she handed out a considerable amount of valuable jewelry

to the Garcias after some persuasion, no? 

“We should have a lawyer draw up the proper paperwork so that certain people wouldn’t get any ideas about the shares. Plus, it’d save the company the trouble of distributing those shares in the future.”

No one dared object to his suggestion. Athena, in particular, was embarrassed to have been called out by him. She already felt bad enough for giving all those gifts to Elena after being persuaded by her lies.

Easton’s heart leaped to his throat. Normally, he wouldn’t even think about breathing too loudly in Andrew’s presence. But this time, he mustered enough courage to speak up. “Great–Grandma is still young.

Athena shot back, “No, I’m not. I’m 80! Andrew, have the lawyer come over today. Madelyn will be staying home too.”

When Madelyn heard this, she gave Athena a puzzled look. “Huh? Why do I need to stay home, Grandma?”

“I’ve decided that only you can sign off on any transaction concerning my shares or it won’t be valid,” Athena declared.

Easton blanched at this. Andrew simply nodded. “It doesn’t have to be Maddie.”

“I’ve made up my mind,” Athena said, her tone unyielding. After getting duped by the Garcias, she could not trust anyone but Madelyn. She would demand Elena return her jewelry by the end of the day.

Easton chalked Athena’s decision up to her age–addled mind. His gaze darted to Madelyn, who felt a chill run down her spine when she caught him looking.

She shook her head and said, “I think it’d be best if Mom is appointed as the signatory instead.”

If she agreed to Athena’s decision, Easton would never leave her alone. She didn’t have the patience to deal with his pestering.

Athena patted Madelyn’s hand and said, “It’s only right that you keep an eye on what is yours.”

A hush fell upon the dining table as everyone threw odd looks at Madelyn.

Madelyn stared at Athena with wide eyes as she continued, “I will give you half my shares today. When you and Andrew have children, they’ll be entitled to the remaining half. How about that?”

Was this Athena’s way of bribing her into starting a family? As

twisted as it was, Madelyn knew it was the best and quickest way to stop Easton from accomplishing his goals.

Madelyn had never been greedy. Everyone thought she would refuse Athena’s offer. Everyone, especially Easton, waited for her to turn down Athena.

However, she clutched Athena’s arm and exclaimed, “Thank Grandma! Andrew and I will try really hard to make a baby!” Shock colored everyone’s expression.
