Chapter 030: Instant Decision
Luke was flat on his back, sucking in air like a fish outta water, eyes glued to the sky. Every inch of him hurt. He just needed a sec, maybe three, to catch his breath.
The Trojans had cranked up their defense to eleven. They were blitzing like crazy, sending four guys to bust through the line, sack the QB, mess up passes, and just generally make life hell for him.
Blitzing's a double-edged sword, though. Sure, it puts the heat on the QB, but it also leaves the backfield wide open. If the blitz flops or the QB dodges and gets the pass off, the defense is in deep trouble trying to cover the receivers.
But the Trojans were cool with taking that gamble.
On their last drive, the Trojans had crossed midfield, leaving the UCLA Bruins with just about five minutes on the clock. The Bruins needed a touchdown pronto and then had to stop the Trojans from scoring, which was a tall order. The Trojans, on the other hand, just needed to slow the Bruins down.
Even if the Bruins scored, it'd only tie the game. If there was still time after the touchdown, the Trojans' offense would get another shot to seal the deal. If time ran out, it'd go to overtime, putting both teams back at square one.
Basically, the Trojans couldn't lose. Their game plan was simple: keep hammering the QB, mess up the Bruins' rhythm, and eat up the clock. Even if the Bruins made some plays, they'd make sure it hurt.
If they pulled it off, they could end the game right here!
For Luke, it was a nightmare. The blitz was cutting his time to throw down to nothing, making every pass a Herculean task. His vision was shot, and whether he completed the pass or not, he was getting clobbered. The hits were draining his energy fast.
The last two minutes were pure hell. Luke had dragged the team thirty yards to midfield, but he'd been hit seven times, each one like getting run over by a truck. His whole body was screaming.
Physical play was never Luke's thing. His lack of speed and accuracy was glaringly obvious, putting him at a huge disadvantage.
And to make things worse, there were only three minutes and twenty-three seconds left, and they were still at midfield. The Bruins' window was closing fast. Forget winning; even tying was looking bleak. They'd barely converted on third down twice to keep the drive alive, but now that they were past midfield, it was only gonna get tougher.
A long pass? The idea popped into Luke's head, but the Trojans' blitz was giving him zero time to throw. He started missing his running game, his ability to throw on the move, his ball-carrying skills, his dodging, and his stiff-arm.
"Bambi, you good?" Marcus's big mug appeared above him, making Luke jump. Sweat was dripping off him, and Luke couldn't help but laugh. He grabbed Marcus's hand and hauled himself up.
"Peachy!" Luke shot back, his eyes locking onto the Trojans' defenders, who looked like wolves ready to pounce. An idea sparked in Luke's brain. He glanced at the coach on the sideline, who was also catching his breath and talking strategy.
"Seven, what's the play?" Luke's mind raced, but all he got was silence. "Seven? You gonna help or what?"
"Tactical design and execution are not services provided by the system," Seven's calm voice replied.
Luke smirked, "Seven, you sound like you're enjoying this. Or am I just hearing things?"
Seven stayed quiet, making Luke chuckle. After a few more seconds, the coaches still hadn't given any instructions. Norm caught Luke's eye, raised his hand, and signaled to wait. But Luke glanced at the countdown clock. Only nineteen seconds left to get this play off, and the clock was ticking down, along with their chances.
Time was ticking, and Luke knew they couldn't waste another second.noveldrama
He shot a look at Norm, who seemed taken aback and quickly whispered something to Rick. But Luke didn't wait for a response. He gathered his teammates and said in a low, urgent voice, "No huddle, guys! We're going full speed! After each play, we keep moving. No regrouping. Let's pick up the pace!"
No-huddle offense, baby. It's all about speed, efficiency, and rhythm. No time for fancy tactics or long-winded huddles. Just pure, raw talent and chemistry between the QB and his receivers. The defense barely has time to breathe, let alone set up. One slip-up from them, and it's game over.
But it's a double-edged sword. One tiny mistake, and the whole play can fall apart. Plus, it's mostly short passes in tight spaces, so if the defense catches on, they can start picking off passes or even snagging interceptions.
This kind of play puts a ton of pressure on the QB. It's all about their skill and quick thinking. In the pros, coaches love their complex playbooks and don't trust young QBs with this kind of freedom. Not everyone's a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady.
But in high school and college, no-huddle is the jam. Young players love showing off their skills, and coaches are cool with letting them. It's a big hit in the NCAA.
The UCLA Bruins were in a tight spot: the clock was ticking, the Trojans were blitzing like mad, and their own playbook wasn't cutting it. No-huddle was risky, but it was their best shot at a breakthrough.

He looked at his teammates. This was his first real game, and they hadn't had much time to gel. But no one argued. They just nodded, turned, and got into position, ready to roll.
Luke glanced at Rick, who had his arms crossed. Rick caught Luke's eye and gave a slight nod. It wasn't just a tactical move; it was a vote of confidence in Luke and a gamble for the win.
Luke took a deep breath, shook off the pain, and focused on the defense. He shouted, "1, 95."
"1" was the formation, and "95" was the route for the wide receivers and tight ends. Everything else was up to the players. This was no-huddle, stripped down to the basics.
With Luke's call, John and Logan moved behind him, switching spots. Logan shifted left, John took the right. Marcus and Luke lined up parallel behind John.
The defense noticed the shift. Number 11 usually passed right, and he had a solid connection with Logan. So, would this play go left or right?
But Malik wasn't fazed. His eyes were locked on Luke. Their plan was to blitz the QB, shut down any medium or long passes, and force short ones. No way they'd mess up again.
"Offense!"
Luke yelled. The center snapped the ball. Luke caught it, turned right, and fired it off in a flash. The Trojans' defense hadn't even started their rush when Marcus snagged the ball. Ignoring the defenders, Marcus bolted left, brushing past Luke and charging towards Logan!
