Chapter 024: A Nobody
Jeff Locke jumped up, fists clenched, and sent his popcorn flying everywhere. He tried to scoop it up, but it was too late. He stood there, fuming and frustrated, staring at the
mess.
He looked up at the UCLA Bruins' offense, who were running around like they had no clue what they were doing. Their faces looked like they had already given up. Jeff couldn't take it anymore and yelled, "Get it together! Come on, guys! The game ain't over, pull yourselves together!"
Across the stands, USC students were already holding hands, singing, and acting like they had already won. The sight made Jeff's blood boil. He waved his fists and shouted, "Get outta here! This is our turf! Go back to your countryside!" His roar was so intense that the veins on his neck looked like they were about to pop.
"Move aside," a voice cut through Jeff's outburst. He turned sharply and glared at the person, who impatiently said, "This game's already lost. Staying here is just embarrassing." The person waved dismissively, like swatting a fly, signaling Jeff to
move.
This wasn't a USC fan but a fellow UCLA Bruins supporter, which made Jeff even angrier. "Who says so! The game ain't over, anything can happen!"
Danny Rees was also fuming. He couldn't believe the football season would end like this, with the UCLA Bruins getting crushed by USC? Just thinking about it made Danny want to explode, but now he was seeing it firsthand? If he stayed any longer, Danny wasn't sure what he might do, but he knew someone would get hurt.
To avoid that, Danny decided to leave.
Seeing Jeff blocking the aisle, wearing a UCLA Bruins jersey and looking all red-faced, clearly a die-hard fan, Danny raised his chin irritably, "Then go tell that to everyone else!"
Jeff followed Danny's gaze and saw the stands behind him. A ton of spectators were leaving their seats like a receding tide. The once-packed seats were now mostly empty, with less than a quarter of the seats still occupied. The vast emptiness was shocking. "How..." Jeff tried to say something, but his anger was stuck in his chest. Then he felt a strong shove on his shoulder, "Are you moving or not? If not, get outta the way. This ain't your house!"
Jeff instinctively stepped aside, and Danny walked past him, followed by a group of friends, cursing, "What the hell is this? That quarterback was bad enough, and now he's injured. This is a disaster, a complete disaster. Thank God this season is over! Damn it!" At that moment, a low cheer came from the field, standing out amidst the singing from the other side and the departing crowd. Jeff immediately turned to look; reflexively, Danny also stopped and turned around, and they saw this scene.
A tall, skinny player stumbled onto the field. He seemed a bit lost, looking around in confusion at the chaotic stands. His bewildered look was that of a complete rookie. Thinking back, Kevin was already a rookie, and the other backup quarterbacks had no playing experience or passing experience at all.
"Shit!" Danny couldn't help but curse again, "They're sending in a kid? Did he even graduate high school? This ain't a video game; it's a real match." The last sentence was shouted directly at the field, and then he grumbled irritably, "Another rookie, I see no hope. This is a nightmare, a complete nightmare. If I keep watching this, I'm gonna have a heart attack. Jesus fucking Christ."
"If you don't like it, then leave!" Jeff couldn't help but snap back at the stranger, "Give our team some faith, will ya? If even we don't support them, what hope do they have?"
"If you wanna support them, you do it." Danny didn't even look back, spat to the side, and cursed, "Damn idiot. You better pray this game doesn't end worse than the Stanford game."
"You!" Jeff was about to roll up his sleeves and charge, but his friend Nate Chandler, standing next to him, held him back in time, "Calm down, calm down, don't bother with them!" Nate firmly held Jeff's shoulder, "They may not support us, but we do. The UCLA Bruins still have us!"noveldrama
Nate shoved Jeff back into his seat, then glanced worriedly at the field and the empty seats around them. "Jeff, you think that kid's got it in him?" Nate had lost his confidence too. His only hope now was that the score wouldn't get any worse. Losing to USC was already a disgrace; no need to make it a milestone of shame, standing in the Rose Bowl, reminding them year after year.
Jeff ignored the people leaving and zeroed in on the field. The young player who had just come on, wearing jersey number "11," didn't even have his name on it. This could only mean one thing: he was a backup player, one who hadn't even earned the right to have his name printed on his jersey. Even freshman Darius Bell had his name on his jersey, but this kid did not.

A disaster, a complete disaster.
Jeff felt a lump in his throat. He wanted to ask, "Why not put Darius Bell in?" But then he realized Darius wasn't exactly a promising quarterback either, so he swallowed his words, slumped his shoulders, and said in despair, "Do we have any other choice?" "7:28" left on the clock, the first quarterback suspended before the season started, the second injured during training camp, the third just got hurt on the field, the fourth is a freshman, and the fifth is a nobody. Maybe that big guy was right; this is a nightmare. Jeff didn't leave, but he slumped in his chair, letting out a long sigh, his eyes a bit vacant.
Luke walked onto the field, his steps unsteady like he was walking on cotton. The reality hadn't sunk in yet. He didn't even have time to react before he found himself on the field, making him question whether this was a dream or reality.
He stopped and looked up at the chaos around him. On his left, USC students were singing loudly, already celebrating their victory; on his right, UCLA students were leaving, seemingly waving the white flag and admitting defeat.
This was the Rose Bowl, the largest stadium in the country. Luke had seen it packed with a hundred thousand people, but it had never felt as overwhelming as it did now. Standing in the center of the field, the vast emptiness around him, the wind howling from all directions, he could barely keep his footing. The world felt so big, and he felt so small. This stark contrast made his palms and back sweat, a sense of unease spreading through his chest.
"Bambi!"
A voice suddenly exploded in his ear, yanking his floating heart back to the ground with no room to breathe. Luke turned sharply and saw Logan's familiar face, smiling brightly, which made Luke's lips curl up too.

Even in such a tough moment, Logan kept smiling.
Then Luke saw the other players coming up to him, surrounding him in the center, forming a semicircle, spreading out like a fan, with Luke at the heart.
They might not like Luke; they might even hate him. But at this moment, Luke was their quarterback, their brain. This was college football, not the professional leagues with all its conflicts and schemes. Everything was relatively simpler. Moreover, from practice squad to backup, Luke had always been diligent and friendly. Many of the main players got along well with him.
At this moment, they were willing to show their support for Luke. Of course, they also wanted to avoid becoming a laughingstock, nailed to the pillar of shame.
Luke refocused. He didn't have time to be excited, to marvel, or to overthink. He had to concentrate on the game. Tick-tock, tick-tock, time was running out.
Luke knew he wasn't on the field to lose or to become a disgrace.
He took a deep breath, calming his heartbeat and blood pressure. Then Luke knelt on one knee, hidden in the center of the group. The players naturally took half a step forward, surrounding Luke. "Third and fifteen, and I just got on the field. My hands aren't even warm yet. Everyone thinks this will be a simple play to get a better punt position. The truth is, my hands are freezing, but I don't think this is a play for a punt. I need your help, guys!"
Luke looked up at his teammates, standing on the same level for the first time, fighting side by side. Then Luke proposed the boldest, most unbelievable plan, leaving everyone stunned.
Logan couldn't help but laugh, shaking his head in amazement. "Bambi, I knew you were a crazy bastard! But I like this kind of crazy! I'm with Bambi, who else?"
"Me!" Voices echoed one after another, as everyone's hands piled on top of each other. Then Luke's voice came from below, "Guys, can you move your hands off my head? This head needs to think, and your hands are a bit heavy."
What do you think?
