Chapter 1022
After leaving the detention center, Alexia wasted no time driving back to her villa. She indulged in a long, hot bath, hoping to wash away the bad vibes clinging to her like a stubborn shadow.
Once her hair was dry, she slipped into a red silk robe. As she opened the bedroom door, she nearly jumped out of her skin.
"Ms. Alexia."
Hans stood rigidly in the doorway, his face a mask of indifference. "Come downstairs. Sir is waiting for you."
Alexia bit her lip. "Alright, let me just freshen up and change into something more appropriate."
"No need. To Sir, it doesn't matter what you wear. Or if you wear anything at all," Hans tossed over his shoulder as he turned to leave. "Hurry. Sir doesn't like to be kept waiting."
Swallowing her irritation, Alexia followed him obediently.
Downstairs, Chad was lounging on the sofa, his long fingers gracefully handling a clay teapot. He poured the first brew over a small Buddha statuette, watching the liquid trickle down its serene face.
"Sir, what brings you here? I was planning on freshening up before reporting to you,” Alexia said, her voice soft as she approached him. She gazed intently at his timeless, sophisticated features. "I know how you value cleanliness. I didn't want to see you before I'd cleansed myself of that filthy place."
Chad offered a faint smile. "I was in the neighborhood and thought I'd drop by."
"It's done. Avery will suffer a heart attack within 48 hours. His health was poor to begin with, so even an autopsy won't raise suspicions," Alexia murmured, a shadow passing over her eyes.
Chad nodded slightly. "You've done well, Alexia."
"I discovered Ms. Evadne visited Avery before I got to him. She's quick to suspect you. It's possible Avery leaked something."
Alexia let out a derisive laugh. "Fortunately, you saw the danger and dealt with him."
"Avery wouldn't dare say anything. Not because he didn't want to, but because he feared me," Chad said, bringing the teacup to his nose and inhaling the aroma. "He never understood me, but I saw right through him. That's what terrified him."
Alexia, too, didn't fully understand Chad, but she felt a strange thrill in the mystery of him.
"Regardless, the experiment may have failed, but your troubles in Elmsworth have lessened. You can breathe easier now."
"No, not yet," Chad replied, his eyes dark and inscrutable. "I sense that Thaddeus is about to wake up. With Ms. Evadne and a capable group of friends by his side, he might just survive this ordeal."
Alexia leaned closer, lowering her voice. "So, what are you suggesting?"
"I hear Ms. Evadne has a rather skilled 'sister-in-law' who's a neurology expert?" Alexia was taken aback. "You mean Mr. Bright, Chasel?"
Chad lowered his gaze, sipping his tea with a casual air. "That person cannot remain in Ms. Evadne's circle or by my brother's side."
Hans perked up. "Shall I handle it?"noveldrama
"There's more than one way to make someone leave," Chad said with a hint of a smile. "Killing isn't the only option. Breaking his spirit can be just as effective."
After being brought back to Elmsworth, Thaddeus was secretly admitted to a top private hospital for treatment. Orders were given that no one was to visit him, especially not the Ashbourne family.
Every day, Evadne waited outside
the hospital from dawn till dusk, and then till dawn again. After a heavy rain, the air turned frigid. She looked up at the hospital windows, unsure which one hid Thaddeus as he lay asleep.
She blew warm breath into her
frozen hands, her cheeks and ears reddened by the cold. "Miss, why
don't you wait in the car? You've net
been out here for too long," Jason suggested, handing her a steaming cup of coffee, concern etched on his face.
"Thaddeus used to stand outside my house, waiting for me, countless times," Evadne said, a touch of moisture in her eyes. She smiled softly. "This time, it's my turn to wait for him."
Jason looked down, at a loss for words that could comfort her. He knew she desperately wanted to do something for Thaddeus but felt helpless, left only to wait and silently pray.
Thaddeus's struggles for love seemed to be repeating themselves through Evadne's trials. Was it really necessary? It seemed unbearably cruel.
Just then, Jason's phone rang. After a brief conversation, he turned to Evadne, his expression shocked.
"Miss, something's happened! Avery had a sudden heart attack and died in detention! By the time the guards found him, he was already cold!"
"What did you say?" Evadne's eyes widened in disbelief. A heart attack? On ROSE Island, despite his
f
constant bleeding, he somehow survived. But now, just days after being brought back to Elmsworth, he dies in detention? Is this reasonable? Is it even possible?
Before she could process it further, another call came through. It was her grandfather.
"Grandpa!" she answered, her breath a cloud of anxiety.
"Ilana! Thaddeus... Thaddeus has woken up!"
What do you think?
