Part 74
Adaline suddenly missed her mother. She asked Tessa to take her to her mother’s house, and her friend happily agreed. Adaline sent a message to Altezza that she would stay at her mother’s house, and Altezza said he would join her later.
Throughout the journey, Tessa observed Adaline in silence. Adaline wasn’t someone who liked to talk a lot and be chatty like herself and Joanna, but Adaline’s silence this time still worried Tessa. Finally, tired of this suffocating silence, Tessa spoke up.
“Is everything okay?”
“She’s a smart woman. She knows what she’s doing. And she’s clearly baiting me. I’m just saying what needs to be said, not what she wants to hear.”
“Adaline…?”
Adaline turned and smiled. “You don’t need to be sad like that.” Adaline reached for her friend’s hand, who was gently rubbing her arm. “Everything will be okay.
“From the beginning, I knew the consequences. Everything you heard from me is what I’m thinking. I won’t try to make him love me or force him to choose between me and Jovanka. The children currently in my womb are his right. I’m just here to lend him my womb.”
“Adaline…?”
“Enough, Miss Tessa Field. Don’t be sad. Life is short. Let’s just enjoy it.” Adaline teased, reminding them of their age difference.
“You…” Tessa squinted. Discussing age was indeed a sensitive topic for women.
Tessa parked her car right in front of Adaline’s mother’s house. Before getting out, Adaline looked at her friend again and said, “Just pretend you never heard this. What happens to me, only we know. I hope Joanna will never know about Jovanka and Altezza’s relationship.
“Joanna knows about the agreement Altezza and I made, but she thinks the agreement is no longer valid because she sees how Altezza treats me, and she’s confident that Altezza loves me.”
“I don’t want Joanna to treat Jovanka or Altezza poorly. You know her character yourself,” Adaline tried to reassure.
“I promise not to mention those photos to her. I can only pray that you and Altezza never separate. I hope Jovanka’s wishes never come true. I don’t want my future nieces and nephews to have a stepmother like Jovanka.” Tessa gently rubbed Adaline’s stomach. Adaline silently agreed. “But regardless of what happens in the future, I want you to always think positively.
“Remember the babies here. Their health, your health is paramount.” Tessa gently rubbed Adaline’s stomach.
“Yes, yes, Miss Field.” Adaline teased again.
That nickname was her call to Tessa almost four years ago. When she was still a new employee at Coskun.
“Alright, Junior. Have a good rest. Prepare yourself for a new day tomorrow and of course for the pile of work.” Her friend said with a positive aura. Adaline nodded. Then she said goodbye and entered the house.
Adaline entered after greeting. She intentionally startled the two middle-aged women in front of her. “Mom!!” She greeted loudly. Both of them were surprised and stared at Adaline wide-eyed.
“Oh my God, Adaline. You scared me,” her mother said, rubbing her chest while Adaline just grinned mischievously.
“I didn’t scare you, you were too focused on watching TV. Didn’t you hear me open the door?” Adaline replied, then sat between the two middle-aged women.
“Are you alone?” Her mother asked.
“I came with Tessa. Altezza still has work, he might join later,” Adaline answered and grabbed the pie on the table. “I’m bored at home alone. Lately, Altezza has been busy with hotel and office matters. Sometimes when he comes home to the apartment, he still keeps working.”
“Hmm.. poor your husband. Working so hard to earn money,” Emma replied sympathetically.
“How’s the baby? Have you had another check-up? Still vomiting often?” Her mother asked, stroking Adaline’s head as she lay on her lap as usual.
“Not yet. The check-up schedule is still next week.” Without realizing it, Adaline rubbed her stomach. It became her new habit after finding out she was pregnant. “Lately, I haven’t been nauseous anymore. In fact, my appetite has increased a lot.”
“That’s good news. But it doesn’t mean you can eat whatever you want. You still have to watch your food intake,” her mother reminded her.
“Especially if it’s because of ‘cravings.’ That’s not allowed. If you really want something, just say you want it, don’t keep saying ‘craving.’ Especially when you want to eat Altezza, you say you’re ‘craving.’ Even though you’re just hungry.” Emma teased. Adaline pouted at her.
“What are you talking about, I’m not like that…”
“Really? I don’t believe your words.”
“Auntie, come on…”
“Alright, alright, you two always argue whenever you’re together. Come on up and change your clothes, give my grandchild some space if you keep pressing him with your office clothes.” Violet ordered, making Adaline glance at her skirt suit.
Her stomach hadn’t bulged yet, and the skirt she was wearing still fit her well, not too tight. But Adaline obeyed anyway. She went upstairs and changed her clothes.
Once in the room, Adaline washed herself with warm water and changed into a knee-length dress with short sleeves. Suddenly, she felt sleepy. She glanced at the clock, which showed eight o’clock. But because her drowsiness couldn’t be resisted, she chose to lie down on the bed and quickly fell asleep.
Altezza cautiously opened the gate of his in-laws’ house so as not to wake the residents. He drove his car straight into the garage and closed it carefully. Adaline had intentionally duplicated all the house keys to make it easier for them to come and go.
It was already ten o’clock, and the atmosphere in the house was quiet. It seemed that all three women there were already fast asleep.
Altezza went up to the upper floor, where his wife’s room was located. The room was dim, with only the light from the bathroom and the bedside lamp on the nightstand. His wife appeared curled up like a fetus, hugging her favorite pillow. Altezza smiled and approached.
Even in the dim lighting, he could see the glow on his wife’s face. Adaline never wore heavy makeup. Nevertheless, she always looked beautiful. And even without makeup, his wife always looked beautiful to him.
Slowly, Altezza opened the wardrobe. He kept some clothes in Adaline’s room, and vice versa. Adaline kept her clothes in Altezza’s room at her parents’ house. It made it easier for them whenever they stayed over.
Altezza grabbed a short-sleeved shirt and boxer shorts, then headed to the bathroom. He quickly freshened up. He returned to the room and saw his wife still in the same position.
Altezza climbed onto the bed. He lay down on the right side of his wife, who was sleeping on her side with her back facing him. Gently, he caressed her stomach, hoping his movements wouldn’t wake her up. “My children, behave in Mama’s belly. Stay healthy, don’t make Mama nauseous again. Have mercy on your Mama,” he whispered as he continued to stroke and ended with a kiss on Adaline’s stomach.
“Yes, Papa. We won’t misbehave,” Adaline answered in a soft whisper.
“Darling?” Altezza lifted his body and saw his wife smiling at him. “Did I wake you up? I’m sorry,” he said, full of regret. Adaline shook her head gently.
“Not at all. I woke up because I needed to pee,” she answered honestly and got up from bed. She left Altezza and headed to the bathroom. Shortly after, she returned and saw Altezza sitting, stretching his legs with his back against the high pillow he had arranged.Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
