Chapter 1846
In the following two days, Waverly stayed at home quietly. She studied the case with Seth, the lawyer, and a few professionals.
They gathered all the evidence that had been found. Apart from Waverly, who had a solemn expression, everyone else was very dejected. Seth threw the
documents in his hands and was visibly anxious.
"I can't believe that there's so much surveillance footage and it's all useless. How have we still not found the child? Can't we at least eliminate the motive?" he roared.
He was furious. What was he paying those professionals and lawyers for? They were all useless!
Shaking his head, one of the lawyers spoke up.
"Mr. Rahman, the law asks for solid evidence. The phone number on the balloon was written using erasable ink, and it's already disappeared on its own. Even if we managed to find some of the remaining traces, we can't restore the numbers on it. Even if it was restored, we can't prove that the plaintiff led the defendant there. Besides, regardless of whether the six-year-old child lied or not, there's already an issue when it comes to making the child express himself. When the time comes, the other party's lawyers can easily scare him into submission. This uncertainty is too big, and our strength is limited. If we don't go about this carefully, we'll end up shooting ourselves in the foot. Thus, that witness is almost useless. I don't think that we should use it in court!"
"The knife doesn't have the victim's fingerprints, either. Instead, Wyatt's
fingerprints are clearly on it. Can the surveillance footage at least prove that the child told him to go to the alley?" Seth asked.
Waverly shook her head. This time, there was no need for an answer from the professionals.
She stated, "The surveillance camera was too far away. There was only the footage and no sound. There are too many ways to interpret it. Not to mention, the footage shows the child asking for directions, so we can't say that he told Wyatt to go there. The key is that the words on the balloon are too vague. The screenshots can't be processed at all, and the traces left on the balloon can't prove that it's a phone number."
This time around, Franklin's planning was too meticulous.
He had taken nearly every detail into account. They couldn't trace the staged car accident back to him at all, and they could not find any records of their conversation or meeting. It was hard enough for them to bring the issue of the car getting scratched to court.
Since nothing had happened after waiting for two days, Waverly was actually a little anxious at that moment.
Could it be that she had made a wrong guess? Was Franklin just trying to kill off Wyatt? Or, even worse, had Franklin caused himself such severe injuries on accident, leading to a lose-lose scenario?
"Are we just supposed to wait, then?" Seth asked. Was Wyatt beyond saving?
Thinking about that, he was furious. He had never thought that he would get backed into a corner without even having the chance to vent his anger.
"D*mn it! I want to slice that half-dead b*stard into pieces and chop him up!" he cursed.
An idea flashed across her mind. Waverly suddenly thought of something. "The knife?"
"Using a knife would be letting him off easy. I'm going to use an axe!" Seth declared.
Waverly took a few photos of the evidence and carefully compared them. She said, "As long as we can prove that Wyatt didn't bring the knife with him, then he can't be charged for intentional harm, right?"
The lawyer nodded.
"That makes sense in principle. There's a big difference between intentional harm and self-defense f we can prove that the defendant doesn't own the knife, and there's no surveillance footage as evidence. There's a high chance that this would help the defendant's case a bit. We could say he initially just wanted to fight the plaintiff but ended up making the wrong move on impulse while trying to defend himself. We can at least guarantee that he won't have to go to jail."
"But aren't Wyatt's fingerprints already on the knife?" Seth pointed out.
"There's no evidence that Wyatt bought the knife, though. What if we can find the origin of this knife?" Waverly suggested.noveldrama
As soon as she spoke, all of them focused their eyes on her. Wasn't that like trying to find a needle in a haystack? It was impossible, as well. It was just an
ordinary fruit knife. How were they going to find its origins?
She laid out a few photos of evidence and began explaining.
"Wyatt had just returned to Casterwich City from somewhere else. Moreover, their journey was unexpectedly delayed, which means that there has to be a gap in time between the original plan and the one that was carried out! In other words, it's likely that Franklin had planned all of this on the spur of the moment. He would at least have to find out your whereabouts or determine which route you were going to take in order to arrange all of this. Since it all happened unexpectedly, there's no way he could have gotten someone to prepare to ambush you on the road in advance. Right now, I think there's another possibility. He might have set up traps at various possible intersections that you guys might pass by on your way back. In other words, he could only set his plan into motion once he's confirmed that your car has been bumped into. In that case, there are only two possibilities. First of all, he had the knife with him from the start. Otherwise, he must have bought a new one. Regardless of which possibility it is, though, he has to ensure that nobody else's fingerprints are on the knife. Since there were no other fingerprints on it, that means the knife is-"
Seth understood what Waverly was getting at the moment she pointed it out. "A
new one! It's a new one!"
"That's right!" she affirmed.
She continued, "That means it must have some kind of external packaging! There's no way he could have opened up the packaging that quickly nor could he have burned it. He must have left it somewhere else. Fingerprints can be erased, but there may be some crucial information on the external packaging or the label. As long as we can find one of those things, we can find out who bought the knife based on the fingerprints on the packaging, the bar code, or the sales records. Once we find out who bought it, we can track them down."
"I will get someone to trace the surveillance footage and look for it right away! Is it
too late, though?" If the packaging had been thrown into a trash can, it was likely that they wouldn't be able to find it.
"We can only try our luck! He wouldn't throw it into a trash can. Even though nobody would rummage through the garbage, there's usually a lot of surveillance around trash cans," Waverly said.
Seth understood the meaning of her words. There was visible excitement in his gaze. "I'll get someone to check blind spots like flower beds and corners!" Indeed, it was to avoid getting caught if a janitor picked it up and threw it into the trash instead. However, janitors typically wouldn't clean up hidden places like that, so they still had a lot of hope.
That was something that Waverly had always assumed was just an alternative. She still felt that it was more likely that Franklin was after the chip, but seeing that
the others had regained their vitality, she felt a little better. She got up and wanted to go to the bathroom when her cell phone suddenly rang. It was a call from an unknown phone number ending in 6996. Suddenly, her heart jumped to her throat.
Was it him?
Was he the one calling?
Franklin liked the numbers six and nine. He used them for his license plate, phone number, and even his house number. Whenever he had the chance, he would choose those two numbers.
What do you think?
