Chapter 113

Larkin squinted as he flipped open the list, reading off names like a roll call at a high–stakes poker game.

“Andrew, Jerry…”

It was as if he were reading from the Book of Life and Death, and those with their names called felt their hearts race, sweat beading on their foreheads. Standing beside them, muscles bulging beneath his suit, was the burly driver, Cliff, ready to take action at any

moment.

Before long, only a handful of people were in the grand ballroom.

The air hung heavy with tension.

Larkin snapped the list shut, his chubby face breaking into a smile as he said, “Mr. Chadwick, everyone’s present.”

“Hmm.” Howard’s gaze swept to a corner of the room and called out, “Valor, come identify

them.”

Valor clutched his fist, and his eyes reddened with emotion. “Yes! Howard, I knew you wouldn’t forget your bro!”

His hand was still bandaged, and his bruised face twisted into a grimace of pain and joy, looking quite a sight.

“Are these the guys who beat you up?” Howard asked.

Valor nodded vigorously. “Yeah, yeah! Except for the dwarf, they’re all here.”

“Deal with them yourself, Howard said with a deep tone, “Larkin, you oversee this.”

“Thank you, Howard! I’ll never again say you can’t get it up. I was just being stupid!” Valor admired Howard to the point of folly, ready to follow him to the ends of the earth.

Howard gave him a cold glance and then turned to say, “Gwendolyn, let’s head home.”

“Okay.”

Gwendolyn’s eyes crinkled with joy. “Jeannie and Roselind have been waiting for a while. now.” She then pushed Howard’s wheelchair and headed out.

Valor watched them leave, then turned to face the handful of spoiled brats with a snort.

“Didn’t expect Valor to have such a solid backup, did you?”

Valor sneered, “Everyone, face down! Stick your butts out!”

“Bro, I didn’t hit you. I just bumped into you a bit.”

Mr. Peterson, I realize my mistake.”

Bainbridge had instigated them to do that. Usually, they wouldn’t dare to mess with Valor. After all, there was safety in numbers, and their families only had a bit of money.

Face down!” Valor shouted with false bravado.

Begrudgingly and with suppressed anger, they assumed the humiliating position.

Valor stood with hands on hips, triumphant, “Let me get this anger out, and you’re free to

go,”

He kicked each one in the rear, taking his revenge.

Alberta watched from the sidelines, her gaze complex. Indeed, luck was on Valor’s side.

She never imagined that everything he said was true and that Howard would come and turn the tidel

Valor had always stood up for Howard, and it turned out Howard was a man of loyalty, making a big fuss to take his side.

Their Peterson family was on the rise.

Deep into the night, under a star–studded sky, two cars stopped before the Chadwick family’s cozy suburban villa. Gwendolyn and Howard stepped out first, followed by three others, all floating on air as if in a dream. Belonging © NôvelDram/a.Org.

The family of five made their way to the living room.

Jeannie broke the silence. “Mom, I want to visit an ENT tomorrow to check my ears. Lately, I keep hearing things. My brother, Howard, is the founder of Summit Corp, huh? The same Summit Corp that’s all the rage?” She was puzzled, yet couldn’t contain her

excitement.

Roselind reached out and pinched her arm hard. “Does that hurt?”

“Ouch! Yes, it’s real!” Jeannie cried out, “Howard is the founder of Summit Corp!”

“Stop yelling. You’ll disturb the neighbors.”

Roselind was no calmer than her. With age, she had learned to keep her emotions bottled

1. up.

When she received Jeannie’s call about her son crashing Warren’s seventieth birthday bash, she and her husband rushed back, ready to clean up the mess.
