Chapter 163: The Arena

-Hugh’s POV-

It was the day of the competition. The news of the affair was spread swiftly and many new people

arrived within the city.

The castle had a birds-eye view of the entire city, and just sitting on the balcony I could see and hear

the crowd within the coliseum.

My goal was the gain favor, or at least show them that I shouldn’t be messed with. Whatever made the

people understand the reason I was given ruling authority. If my father knew he’d probably speak out

against my action saying how it’s not needed. I believe it is if I want to continue without backlash.

———

-An hour later-

I stepped my way to the opening of the balcony. The crowd cheered as it was time for the battles to

commence.

“All those who wish to fight, make your way into the arena.!”

The arena was large, many people walked in and grabbed a weapon provided.

Quite a few turned out.

“Competitors if you wish to fight me for my position you must first battle each other. Those who are left

will have the chance to battle me!”

“The rules are anyone who falls unconscious, surrenders, or is killed, is eliminated.! Now let’s begin this

final competition.!”

I sat on the ledge holding my sword watching the fights. Some decided to branch off into pairs to fight

or just ran around taking down anyone they could. I gave them to option to surrender but just by the

way they fought it seems death is the only option.

I didn't expect the crowd to be so joyous about the fight. Father did tell of how Demons found this sort

of entertainment enjoyable, but all I could see was a battle to the death. I would have thought that after

20 some odd years of peace and integration, this lust for carnage would have settled. I guess my

hopes were too high.

——-

The competition was nothing but bloodshed, the number of bodies that were on the ground and the

amount of blood was astounding. I didn’t even have to step on the field and a majority was gone.

There were less than fifty competitors left. That’s out of the hundreds that started. However, while they

were still fighting I decided to drop in. I got antsy and I can’t truly prove myself if the competition was all

dead. One Demon whose body size reminded me of Sir Jesse noticed me and came after me.

His sword was held high in the air as if about to swing and his deep battle cry was all I could hear. I

dashed forward at the tall man his walls were taken down with ease. A simple slash to the leg and then

to his side and he fells to his knees.

Still flailing his sword at me, I pushed mine against his sliding along until my blade slashed his hand,

making him drop his sword.

Hugh: “Leave or die, choose.!”

Though another man came just as I was giving the large man a chance, stabbing him in the back. The

new person didn’t seem to show much care for anything except winning. Once our eyes met I could tell

there was no need for any form of compassion. This was a competition of pure gore and I had to

participate.

My mouth snarled in anger at the site. My hand wielding the sword stabbed the new man clear through

his throat.

It wasn’t long till the next few people started coming after me, one after another. Some weren’t even

demons, but every time I had to kill them, they wouldn’t give up. Property © of NôvelDrama.Org.

Finally after plowing through I couldn’t say how many individuals, one after another. I stood not ten feet

away from a final competitor.

He was looking down at a fallen competition. He turned and we locked eyes.

Both our swords were soaked with blood and both of us breathing heavily. He looked older than me, he

had spiky red hair and his eyes showed a fire deep within him. My sword instinctually rose toward him

and the crowd roared in delight.

My eyes stared intently at him. He decided to make the first move. He was quick. Our swords bashed

together. The sound of our swords clashing was the loudest sound within the arena.

Throughout the competition, many competitors used their mana to boost their power but I haven’t even

initiated it yet, and the man in front of me hasn’t either. I smiled with a short laugh. He pushed off away

from me and I dove after him.

The constant back and forth, every lunge seemed to have a counter. It was clear he was a fighter,

however, I couldn’t guess for how long.

I swung high, pushing his incoming attack down. I tried sweeping his legs but he backed up. I dove

after him and our blades met.

We both showed determination and I smiled as our faces were close.
