A Billionaire’s Ruse

Narrator’s POV

One beautiful Saturday morning, there was a knock on the main and Regina went to answer it.

A young gentleman was smiling at her as she opened the door.

“Hi.” The stranger greeted.

Regina took her time and ran her eyes through him. She noticed that he had a perfect set of white teeth, a finely shapped haircut, and he definitely smelled nice. He was perfect, with perfect physical features.

“Good morning mister, how may I help you?” She asked, giving nothing away.

“Good morning. My name is Edward. I am here to see Mrs…” he said as he ran his eyes through the card.

“Mrs. Thorton, right. Please come in. She has been expecting you.” Emily said as she opened the door wide to let him come inside.

She closed the door and led him to the living room, “Please have your seat, I will go and get her.” She told him as she left to call Mrs. Thorton, but she was already making her way down the stairs. So, she went to get refreshments for them instead.

“Edward dear. You are here already?” She said as she greeted him with peck to the cheek, “you’re welcome to our humble abode. Please seat. You can leave now Reg.”

Regina headed straight to Emily’s room to.

Emily’s POV

“Miss, you need to get ready,” Regina said excitedly as she entered my room.

I’m used to her bubbling nature by now. In fact, we have become fast friends ever since the incident with James. She does not even need to knock on my room’s door most times.

“What happened?” I asked as I kept staring at my phone, trying to send a document to my dad

“Miss, it’s…”

“I have told you to stop calling me Miss. I will prefer Emily to that, Reg and I am sure you know that”

“I am sorry. Old habits die hard.”

“I know. But you don’t even make any effort.”

“I will do my best Em.” She said with a little confidence.

“Now, that is more like it.” I said, smiling at her.

“So, what got you so excited?” I asked dropping my phone to give her full attention.

“Yes, your mom invited an handsome man over.” She said excitedly.

“Is that it? This is not the first time she invited one over Reg.”

“This is different. He is not like any other man I know have seen. You would say yes even without a proposal, I assure you.” she claimed as she went back downstairs after she got a call from my mum.

One thing I know is that Regina would never deceive me.

As she spoke, I felt a ting of excitement run tbrough me.

I quickly picked an outfit and waited for a call from downstairs.

Mom soon sent her to call me downstairs. I couldn’t wait to see him that I almost tripped on the stairs with excitement.

As I walked down the stairs, I could not get my eyes off of him. He was also staring at me and I am sure I had him mesmerised.

I felt gravitated to him as I made my way down the staircase. As I walked towards him, he also walked towards me.

When we met, he took up my hands and planted a kiss on it.

“Hey baby, meet Edward,” my mother said. “Edward dear, meet my angel.”

“She’s indeed an angel,” He muttered.

After my meeting with Edward, things went on so fast between us.

He diid everything to win my heart to him. When he was not buying gifts for me, he was taking me out on picnics and he made me feel so special that I soon forgot all about James.

He eventually popped the question that landed me in this mess.

Life had been hell since then and I did not really understand where I got it all wrong

Edward was a thorn in my neck.

My parents and everyone believes Edward is rich but I had always had my doubts.

Edward began showing his true colors after the engagement. I mean I have been the one spending on us. He claimed his business was not doing fine and he needed to pour in profits back to it every season.

That has been his excuse for not holding the wedding. He refused to hold a wedding with my father’s money but that had not stopped him from demanding money from me constantly.

The alarm went off at 6 a. m and I lazily dragged myself out of bed. I got into the bathroom and took my bath and brushed my teeth.

I had an appointment with the doctor today.

My mom seemed concerned about my health. I have been feeling sick and so out of it these few days that she was around. She had being pressuring me to see a doctor and I decided to indulge her today

“I hope you are ready?” She asked from the doorway.

“Almost mum. I will join you soon, I shouted from the bathroom.

“Okay. Has she taken something today, I mean food.” I could hear her asking the maid.

“She has not taken any food yet ma’am. But I have just served her a glass of orange juice.” I heard the maid reply her.

“Okay. You need to eat something Emily. What is for breakfast?” She asked the maid. I had no strength to argue that I had no appetite.

Mum, I will meet you in the dinning. I need to grab my phone”. I told her as I turned to head back to my room.

“Alright baby. Don’t keep me waiting.” She said as she began to eat.

I had not taken two steps, when I bumped into Edward

“Where are you going this early Saturday morning?” he demanded.

I remained silent.

“I asked you a question Emily. where are you off to?” he howled.

I was shaken to my bones. Ever since we got engaged, he had never used such tone on me.
